The most successful Dartmouth National Alumni Dinner honoring President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins was very well attended by members of our class. The seating list showed ten classmates present with thenbetter halves. Four classmates were lone wolves. Several, like Dr. Al Ferguson and myself were only able to stop for awhile to attend the very enjoyable pre-dinner cocktail party, ably organized by Bruce Friedlich and Frank Hall.
Dr. Al Ferguson was on from Pittsburgh, Pa. for a convention of orthopedic surgeons. In addition to having his own Private Practice there, Al is associated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical School.
Lou and Barbara Young were up from Philadelphia, Pa., Lou combining pleasure with business as a sales representative of one of the nation's largest furniture and equipment suppliers for banks. Stu Steffey also traveled from Philadelphia to attend the dinner and the Alumni Council Meetings. In the short time that I was on hand I also encountered Bob Darbee and his wife, Marston and Nancy Gibbs, Don and Pat Stillman, Snuffy Smith, JacK and of course, Bruce and Kathy Friedlich. Marston Gibbs subsequently reported to me the presence of Bob Barr. Also listed on the seating list were Hank and Carol Childs, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hammond, Lou Johnstone, Dan and Bailey Provost, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Schlenker, Mr. and Mrs. Art Sampson Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stothart, Bob and Winnie Tepper, and Mills Ten Eyck.
Seth Fitchet, who has been located in Phoenix, Ariz., for the last six years, has been transferred to Cleveland, Ohio, where he has opened an office for the investment firm of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. Seth was unfortunate enough to land in Cleveland at the peak of its zero spell, but that did not prevent him from attending a Dartmouth lunch with Al Hutton.
Ed McMillan of Hamilton, Mass. has been proposed as a general partner of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, effective March 1. Ed is manager of the firm's Milk Street office in Boston, a post which he assumed in 1955 after serving as manager of the firm's Westwood, Calif, office. Ed joined the firm in 1946. In Boston he is also active in the Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chairman of the Investment Division of Business Education Day; as this year's Program Chairman of the Boston Sales Executive Club; and as a member of the Union Boat Club, Manchester Bath and Tennis Club, and Essex County Club. Ed and Betty Jane now have three children.
Ray Hayes, a native of Worcester, Mass., and presently a resident of Findlay, Ohio, was recently named manager of the sickness and accident claims department, law division, of the State Mutual Life Assurance Co. of America. In 1950 Ray became associated with the accident and sickness claim department of Paul Revere Life Insurance Co., and in 1955 he was transferred to their field organization in Findlay.
Joe Griffith was recently appointed product manager of sheet and plate for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Sales Inc. of Chicago.
Dick Rose is now sales promotion manager of Machlett Laboratories of Stamford, Conn. Before joining Machlett Laboratories, Dick was with General Electric Co.
Jim and Betty Curtis became the proud parents of number 6 in December. The score is now three girls and three boys, the latest addition being a boy.
Congratulations are in order for Dr. DickSexton of Providence, R. I., for the excellent work he is performing as Aquinas House Associates' sponsor for our class.
Bill and Ruth Galbraith were host and hostess at a Washington's Birthday shower in honor of Stu and Audrey May.
Phil Hall of Meriden, Conn., was added to the Board of Directors of the Home National Bank and Trust Co. of Meriden at the annual meeting of the Board in January. Phil is president, treasurer and general manager of Russell Hall Co.
Lewis K. Johnstone '41 has been promoted by Champion Paper and Fibre Company to Director of Purchasing. A resident of Cincinnati, he is a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
