Activities of the club have been expanded considerably as special event chairman Dave Traber'67 looks far afield to organize unique gatherings. In July we met for an evening of fireworks and music under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl on the 4th, and then through the courtesy of Stu Durkee '33 we filled a block of 50 seats at the Laguna Beach Art Festival. Both events were so over-subscribed that we are trying to arrange for more tickets in 1975. A rock music concert in September met with less interest, perhaps proving that Traber cannot stray too far afield in his search for interesting happenings.
Our first fall luncheon featured a flamboyant focus on fluctuating prices by Investment Counselor Steve Fast '54 who demonstrated with visual aids that in many cases a depression is already upon us - although he did not show us the chart on pork bellies! Dartmouth Night was well-attended by Alumni and wives who were brought up to date on Alumni Council affairs by Councillor Wes Nutten '51, and let down on the Indian Symbol Issue by RudyPacht '35. Secretary Ranney's ridiculous telegram to President Kemeny ("If Roses were red and violets were pink, Dartmouth could beat Princeton, don't you think?") was slightly prophetic in that the team proved that violets are not pink; and President and MC Bob Morris'36 added much hilarity to the evening although we can't recall just how. The October luncheon speaker, Mark Saginor, MD '58, provided good insight into the problems of being fat or thin, drawing upon his endocrinology specialty with humor and grace.
The club strongly supports enrollment activities and the efforts of Joe Scott '58 in that area. In August a barbecue was held for new and old students going back to Hanover, continuing what was in the past a spasmodic tradition but is now an annual event. In December, on the 14th, Defensive Line Coach Jerry Berndt will conduct an enrollment information seminar for high school students who might be interested in applying to Dartmouth - and if you know of such boys or girls please contact Joe Scott at 213-775-6296 so that he can arrange for them to be invited. The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Union Oil Auditorium, 461 S. Boylston Street, in Los Angeles.
The Scholarship Fund of the club is currently providing a $1000 annual assistance to a student in Hanover, and your tax-deductible contributions are always appreciated.Chairmen of our fund are Bill Parley '31 and Larry Gotlieb '70, who hope to build the capital enough to support more than one student.
Dues-payers receive a monthly card announcing luncheons and special events, so if you are not getting one of these regularly, you might contact Secretary Ranney or President Morris to get yourself in on the action.
The South Shore (Mass.) Club cosponsored a six mile road race duringScituate's Heritage Days in which 64athletes competed. Tom Hickey '61, clubpresident, and Chet Young '36, presidentof the Scituate Chamber of Commerce, presented the trophies.
