It is frigid everywhere these days, except in Cuba. Maybe the sub-zero weather gripping most of the country these first days of the New Year is responsible for the news wires being so frozen that it is going to require a lot of ice-chipping to ferret out enough news to even begin to meet the usual span of my monthly journalistic venture.

Among the numerous stops that Santa made at Christmas time was at the home of Harry and Isabel Maxwell in Sharon Hill, Penna., where he left the wonderful gift of a promotion for Harry from Assistant Personnel Manager to Personnel Manager of the Sun Oil Company for the Philadelphia area. Harry first joined Sun in 1938 as a laboratory technician at the Marcus Hook Refinery. He was appointed Assistant Personnel Manager in Philadelphia in 1950. I'll wager that the Maxwells never run out of oil these cold, wintry nights.

Nor does John Williams or Don Salisbury, not that they need heat where they are now located, I hope. John is now situated in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia, with the Arabian-American Oil Company. Don is in San Francisco, Calif., as Director of Public Relations of Richfield Oil Corporation.

The New Year has brought with it the emergence of a Dartmouth dynasty in the government of New York State. Just to be sure that Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller '30, has able assistance, before handing. over the destiny of the state to-him, the former governor appointed our own Monk Larson a member of the Council of the State University College on Long Island.

There appear to have been some recent reassignments to the guys still in the Armed Forces. Lt. Col. Ed Marks is now a member of the staff and faculty of the U.S. Army Staff and Command School at Ft. Leavenworth Kan. Lt. Col. Phil Hallam is somewhere overseas with the sth Air Force. Capt. DickJachens, recently reported back in the USA from Japan, has taken up a new residence in Arlington, Va. Col. Bob Dixon is now at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala.

Bob Barr has taken on a new chore for 1959. that of Vice President of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers. Bob was elected to this post at the October dinner of the Society in New York. Rick Davidson was on hand for this gala occasion.

While Rick was busy casting his ballot in a Dartmouth organization, Norm Locke was busy nominating candidates to head another Dartmouth organization. Norm recently undertook this task as chairman of the Nominating Committee of the Dartmouth Club of Bridgeport, Conn.

Out Ohio way, John Reed is also an eager beaver. In addition to being active in the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland, John served as a chairman in the Capital Gifts Campaign.

Down Pennsylvania way, Stu Steffey recently mounted the soap box (again) to laud the exploits of the 1958 Big Green Eleven before a monthly luncheon of the Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia.

Recently, Stu wrote to me about the prospect of drumming up interest in a new class directory. Lew Johnstone also made the same suggestion some time ago. Among us, we have obtained several recent directories from other classes that are very well done. My personal opinion is that well in advance of our next reunion it would be an excellent idea to have in the hands of all interested members of the class an up-to-date directory. The price that it could be put out for would not be prohibitive. What are your thoughts on the matter, folks? Let's hear from some of you as to your reaction to this suggestion.

When you write to me, and I hope you all will, please include a little news. I am hurting! Witness the brevity of this epistle, for which I apologize, but over which I have no control at the moment.
