The surprise team of the year has been the Dartmouth varsity golfers who thus far have a record of six straight wins and no defeats. The Indians have had little difficulty rolling over Lowell Tech 6-3, Middlebury 7-2, Brown 5-2, Harvard 5-2, Amherst 6-1, and Siena 7-2. However, it must be conceded that the opposition was not as strong as might be and this was borne out by Dartmouth's showing in the Eastern intercollegiate golf tournament held at Princeton on May 9-10. In this tourney Dartmouth finished in eighth place while Bob Dolan, who shot 153 for 36 holes, finished in a three-way tie for 16th place in the individual honors. Captain Ward Hamm and Bill Rex, the Big Green's number one and two men, both had a bad day and finished with identical 165 scores.
The current rankings have Captain Ward Hamm playing first followed in order by Bill Rex, Bob Stiles, Bill Dolan, Phil Fast, Bob Douglass, Al Anderson and Tom Sayles. In recent encounters Dolan and Rex have had the low scores, Dolan shooting a 73 in the Siena victory and Rex carding a 71 against Amherst.
Commenting on the play this season, Coach Tom Keane admitted he was both "pleased and surprised by our play." Said Tom, "The boys have been doing very well considering the fact that the weather has kept us off the course a large part of the time. We didn't fare too well at the intercollegiates, but the opposition was rough down there at Princeton. Actually, the team has done much better than I predicted they would and the best part is that I will lose only three men Ward Hamm, Phil Fast and Bob Stiles by graduation. Next year should be even better than this."
