Another faithful member of '99’s family has gone. Elizabeth Holbrook (Mrs. Herbert C.) Collar died in Lakewood, N. Y., August 3, at the home of her daughter Margaret, Mrs. Grant J. Gruel. She had been in poor health for several years, bedridden since May. Besides Margaret she leaves a daughter Alice, Mrs. Millard F. Arlington, also of New York: three Gruel grandsons (one, Grant J. Jr. '56), and three great-grandchildren. In 1954 Alice and her mother attended '99's 55th. A simple service in the chapel at Buffalo's Forest Lawn Cemetery was followed by cremation; then her ashes were buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain, Mass., next to her husband, who died in 1919. Those of you who still have the 18th report should read the account of Herbert's winning the 440 in '97 and thus clinching the Worcester Meet for Dartmouth.
The deaths of Maude Wilkins (Mrs. Edward B.) Wardle Jan. 4 and of Arthur D. Wiggin Feb. 10 were followed by spring committal services: for Maude, June 27 in East Hartford, Vt., attended by Weary's three children, - Gratia Woods of Takoma Park, Md., Harry of Quincy, Mass., and Rosemary Knox of Meriden, Ct., and their families; for Arthur, May 16 in Barton, Vt.. attended by Wig's four children, - Ruth Chase of Port Jarvis, N. Y., Dorothy Ray, Jane Robillard and Arthur of Exeter, N. H. In the customary decoration of local '99 graves at the 60th, some may have wondered at the omission of Wesley Jordan and Jim Richardson. These two classmates rest elsewhere, the former in Plainfield, N. H., the latter in St. Johnsbury, Vt.
In the Class Newsletter of last summer some statistics of our class families were given: 24 men surviving, 16 wives, 40 widows, 183 children (154 married), 364 grandchildren (37 married), and 67 great-grandchildren, - a total Class Community of nearly 900. Naturally additions are still being reported: for Samuel Burns, previously unreported, 3 great-grandchildren; and for K. Beal and May their first, - Aug. 13 in Miami, Amy Elizabeth Keech, daughter of Malcolm and Rachel's daughter Nancy May.
Ninety-Niners are on the move. Helen (Mrs. Willis) Hodgkins spent the summer with son Ted and Ruth at Kennebunk Beach before returning to Phoenix; Joe Gannon left Ogunquit for West Hartford Sept. 8; Warren and Helen Kendall left Kennebunk for Sarasota Sept. 15; Tim Lynch will leave Cotuit ("Pinehurst-on-the-Cape") for the original North Carolina Pinehurst Oct. 13. Mabel (Mrs. Pitt F.) Drew has moved from Brookline, Mass., near daughter Sally Baldwin, to Wakefield, R. I., near daughter Caroline Robinson. Sam Smith's sisters Florence and Stella have bought a lot in the Wyeth development on Lebanon Road; when they have sold their colonial mansion in Pembroke, Mass., they will build in Hanover. Finally, a summer European trip by Ikey Leavitt's daughter Norma, head of the Department of Physical Education for Women, University of Florida, Gainesville.
Following the August and September newsletters we hope in December to send out a greeting to help all '99ers celebrate together the combined spirit' of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
