EIGHT contractors submitted bids for construction of the Hopkins Center, Richard W. Olmsted '32, business manager of the College, announced on October 15, the closing date for bids. The companies were Consolidated Constructors, Inc., New York; George A. Fuller Co., Boston; George B. H. Macomber Co., Boston; Perini Corporation, Framingham, Mass.; Turner Construction Co., Boston; Vermilya-Brown Co., New York; Virginia Engineering Co., Newport News, Va.; and John A. Volpe Construction Co., Maiden, Mass.
Mr. Olmsted said that the College's decision would not be made immediately. "While the bids are not entirely in line with the established budget," he added, "adjustments most certainly can be made to conform to it. We can therefore say at this time that the Hopkins Center can be constructed with no sacrifice of the essential parts of the concept."
In planning the Hopkins Center, a construction cost of $7,600,000 has been the estimate generally used. The project calls for four interconnected buildings at the southeast corner of the campus, designed to provide facilities for educational, cultural and social activities.
