The Dartmouth Association of the Great Divide wound up its regular monthly luncheon meeting schedule last spring with a spate of good food and forceful utterances by Mr. Gene Cervi, tempestuous newspaper publisher and no-holds-barred literary "rassler" of Denver. Sky Grey '54 provided us with a splendid stable of varied speakers all winter, for which we are grateful.
The placid pool of summer activity was rippled by two traditional Dartmouth events that were well attended and enjoyed by all, each in his own fashion. On June 25, 1959, on Ned Grant's '31 rolling acres, the faithful convened under the experienced eye of BobWoodberry '54, and enjoyed steaks charcoaled on the open grill, softball, suds for all, and a delightful innovation: a Calypso singer. These exotic rhythms belted out across the foothills where the Utes once roamed, were curiously intriguing. Around Ned's hospitable fire, eight or nine of a dozen men accepted for the Class of '63 from our area were informally introduced. We wished them good fortune and accompany them in spirit.
Bob Hackstaff '51, Sky Cross '46, and BobChapman '31 manipulated mind and matter to a successful conclusion in the Squaw Picnic on the Reservation of the Kiwanis Club on Genessee Mountain. This took place on August 7, 1959, amid shrieks of girlish laughter from dates and wives, while EdParker '16 held forth at the fireside.
Late September found us again at the University Club as luncheon meetings were resumed. At this time we were entertained by Judge Phillip Gilliam whose personal reminiscences and humorous anecdotes defived from many years on the bench as Judge of the Juvenile Court of Denver, were both entertaining and ominous. A good many inclined twigs need propping up, it would seem.
So it goes.. Cal Fisher '32 is still at the helm; committees are organized; contacts are being made with likely high school and prep-school students — it looks like a good year.
Art Kiendl '44, Dean of Students at University of Colorado, addressed a recent Dartmouth alumni luncheon in Denver. Also shown are Eddie Toothaker '32 (left), Will Nicholson '22 (center), former Mayor of Denver, and Wynne Matteson '03.
