Admission Experiment
MARCH 1959

ANEW and experimental system of "early acceptance" has been initiated by the Admissions Office this year, permitting high school seniors of exceptional qualifications to complete and present their final applications during the fall or early winter. If a man can qualify for the highest standards of admission, he may immediately be accepted by Dartmouth provided he is willing definitely to commit himself to the College and drop applications to all other schools. Those who apply for early admission but are not accepted are then automatically reconsidered during the regular March and April selection periods.

The Admissions Office emphasizes that early application does not help a candidate's chances for admission. The criteria for acceptance are the same no matter when an application is submitted, and only those whose high school and personal records are so outstanding as to make it obvious that they will be accepted in the spring are admitted early.

Of those who applied for early acceptance this year, 88 have been admitted and will definitely be members of the Class of '63. The final word on another 47 who were considered has been postponed until the spring. In its first year the experiment seems to have worked out very well; and for 88 young men the College has eliminated those "days that try the souls" of high school seniors waiting for notice of acceptance or rejection.
