The Dartmouth Down in Dixie activities for 1958 were climaxed with a post-Christmas party at the home of Jeanne and John Mack '48 in Memphis on December 28. Alumni, undergraduates, prospective applicants to Dartmouth and their guests were greeted genially by our host, the club president, and his charming wife.
A handsome montage on the mantel showing Baker Library and the campus foreground contributed to a Dartmouth-away-from-Hanover setting. Colonel Maxwell Anderson's '25 bronze plaque was lent for the occasion. A well-remembered New England punch formula and a log fire provided the aura.
Undergraduates Barnett and Lewis provided applicants with current information about Dartmouth, aided by old grads Hudson and Diggs, of the class of '58, fortified with bulletins, Carnival posters, Jacko's Quarterlies and the back issues of The Dartmouth.
It isn't known whether Phil Glazer '34 spied a well-rounded, long-radius, potential quarterback among the prospective applicants, but we know that if he's in the Grits Belt, Phil will locate him, unless, of course, our good friends from Lookout Mountain and Moccasin Bend reach him first.
Oddly enough, the lively conversation, punch and Tennessee country ham drowned out the gavel.
Representing the College, George B. McKee '23 (left) and George R. Cruze '41 (right) of Burlington, Vt. present a certificate of recognition to Holland Smith, principal of Burlington High School, whose representatives in the Class of '61 achieved a combined scholastic average placing their school's delegation in the Class's top ten.
