A weekend in Boston recently gave me the opportunity to talk to Bib Bankart, my number one source of information on the doings of our New England contingent. He had little to report other than the gathering of our clan that took place at the kick-off dinner for the Capital Gifts Campaign in the Greater Boston area. No less than seven '37ers were on hand. These included, besides Bankart, Les Barrett, John Handrahan, GibReynolds, Stan Lappin, Stan Berenson, and Jim Luttrell. My informant mentioned something about John Handrahan recuperating nicely. This obviously indicated a call to Handrahan to be in order, and, from this, I learned that John was involved in an automobile accident some months back, and was quite badly banged around. However, John hastened to assure me that he is coming along quite satisfactorily, with complete recovery indicated.
A very welcome letter from Stan Lappin brings word of the honor recently bestowed on Stan Berenson. At the annual Swampscott-Marblehead Brotherhood Night last month, before an audience of over one thousand people, Bernard Berenson was named Marblehead "Man of the Year." This citation is awarded each year to an outstanding citizen of the town who has done the most to make brotherhood more real to the community. We hasten to add our own sincere salute to Stan on this honor.
Our New England contingent continue to fill up our column for the month. Bancroft Dwinell was recently elected vice-president of manufacturing, Rock of Ages Corporation, Graniteville, Vt. Bandy has headed up manufacturing, at both their granite and capacitor operations, since 1955. Ed Loveday was recently elected assistant treasurer of Benz Kid Company and Goniprow Kid Company, both of Lynn, Mass. Ed has been affiliated with both of these firms ever since graduation.
We recently came across a newspaper article about Jake Newton, and an address he gave before the Worcester (Mass.) chapter, National Machine Accountants Association. The title intrigued me - "Systems and procedures related to machine accountants." Does this conjure up in your mind a picture of a multi-limbed mechanical monster of some sort, whose function it is to replace a whole group of everyday accountants? Anyway, Jake, as you may remember, is an industrial engineer with Anderson-Nichols Company of Boston, and a past president of the Worcester chapter, National Association of Accountants.
Another newspaper clipping covered a discussion before the Alpha Beta Epsilon Sorority, Mu Chapter, by Dr. William B. Dwyer on the subject, "Development of the Junior College." On this subject, Bill can surely pose as an expert. Not only is he currently Director, Muskegon Community College in Muskegon, Mich., but, for six years he served as President of Gulf Park College, Gulfport, Miss., and three years as Dean of Westbrook Junior College, Portland, Me.
Last month I mentioned how Bill Dixon's picture appeared in the Newark, N. J., newspaper. Well, lo and behold, it showed up again this month. This time to announce his election to the post of vice-president of O'Gorman and Young, Inc., the insurance agency with which Bill has been affiliated for about ten years. What have you got in store for next month, Bill?
This does me out of any news items, letters, post cards or any other sort of communication. The only thing remaining uncovered is the wonderful weekend I spent in Hanover just a couple weeks ago, mostly with my son, but incidentally also with Bill Coe, Larry Brooks and Warren Crumbine, and their respective sons at Freshman Fathers Weekend. Take it from me, don't pass up any affairs like this. It was a wonderful experience, from start to finish - beautifully organized and nicely done. At one of the evening affairs a group of eight freshmen entertained us with some well-arranged vocal numbers. One of the eight I recognized as Larry Brooks' sort, Pete. Most impressive to me, as I look back on the weekend, was the new picture I gained of my freshman son who just a few short months ago seemed much too young to be left alone in Hanover. There's no doubt but what Dartmouth has done a lot for our young men already.
