Wins Hood Trophy
JUNE 1959

John R. Scotford Jr. '38 (left) was honored at the annual class officers' dinner in Hanover, May 1, with the 1958 Harvey P. Hood Trophy, given annually to the outstanding Class Agent among those eleven to 25 years out of college. The following citation, read by Fund Chairman Donald F. Sawyer '21 (right), accompanied the award:

John R. Scotford Jr., Head Class Agent for the Class of 1938: It is not surprising that your five-year term as Head Agent for 1938 has happily coincided with five recordbreaking years for both the Alumni Fund and the Class of 1938. Certainly your imaginative leadership has been responsible for the 1938 records and a goodly share of credit for the Alumni Fund results also must go to you. In your first year as Head Agent, 1938 captured the Group IV Green Derby competition and every year since you have increased your class dollar and contributor totals. The record shows that your dollar total has increased from $10,000 to over $16,000 in this period, while at the same time 1938 has ranked consistently among the top ten alumni classes in contributors. In 1957, when the Alumni Fund had its finest campaign in history, you were serving as President of the Class Agents Association - another happy coincidence! This is the record, but we honor you tonight not merely for such accomplishments, impressive though they may be, but for the creativity, imagination and inspiration which you have brought to both your class campaigns and the Alumni Fund program. Your agent mailings have been copied not only by many Dartmouth classes, but by classes at many other colleges without, unfortunately, one cent of copyright fees. Your unique talents were responsible for adding new dimensions of strength and impact to our Alumni Fund Committee mailing pieces. By combining originality in design and layout with a high degree of taste and judgment you have provided new standards for all Alumni Fund mailings. We are confident that these same abilities will have a profound effect on the Newsletter program as you take on your new role as Newsletter Editor for 1938. For such dedicated service to your class, the Alumni Fund and Dartmouth, the Alumni Fund Committee is highly privileged to honor you this evening as the outstanding Head Agent of a class eleven to twenty-five years out of College by awarding you the Harvey P. Hood Trophy for 1958.
