After two months of workouts the Dartmouth varsity swimming team, coached by veteran Karl Michael, opened its season in early January with an upset win over Colgate, 53-42. This, coupled with the recent 69-26 victory over Amherst, gets the Indian swimmers away to what could well be another fine season in the Eastern circuit.
Against Colgate sophomore Terry Bentley set a new Dartmouth record and tied the Spaulding Pool record with a clocking of 2:14.5 in the individual medley event, and then he teamed up with Jay Pierson, Scott Piper and Captain Tom Travis for a new Dartmouth and Spaulding Pool record of 4:00.1 in the 400-yard medley relay.
Veteran Charlie Brown handily won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races, with Jay Pierson annexing the 200-yard backstroke and Glen Gemelli the dive.
In the Amherst meet, won 69-26, the Big Green swept the first three places in four of the first six events. Charlie Brown and Captain Tom Travis teamed up to take first and second places in the 100-yard freestyle, while Gemelli easily won diving honors. The Big Green won the 400-yard medley relay, but yielded to Amherst in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
