Happiness Lads and Lasses, here is the mid-spring issue of the '57 notes. Let's begin with a wonderful letter from the class moneyman, Steve Lampl. Let me first put in a plug for the good job that Steve has done with the Alumni Fund Campaign. As you know the Class did a fine job with its share of the Capital Gifts Campaign. This year the '57s who were not able to contribute or were not contacted can join forces with those '57s who are in a position to increase their contribution to the college - and get this old class off to a flying start in the 1960 campaign. All you have to do is take a portion of the income tax refund before you spend it - write a check and let the College spend it for you.
"Jim Francis has completed a very successful basketball season with the Akron Goodyear's of the industrial basketball league. Jim averaged 21 points per game and he is regarded by the league coaches as having a good chance of being selected for the U.S. Olympic Basketball team. Jerry Sachs is presently in the public relations department of the Baltimore Orioles. With the team they have I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up playing third base by the time August rolls around."
From Milwaukee comes news that Joe Kane has joined the sales staff of Lakeside Laboratory, Inc., as a professional service representative and will represent the ethical pharmaceutical firm in Harford county and part of Baltimore county in Maryland. Joe has completed two years of Army duty and is no stranger to Maryland, having been stationed at Fort Holabird. He and wife Adelina have one child and live in Baltimore.
In the engagement column Miss Kathryn Stott and Tom Hall lead off. Kathryn graduated from Colby Junior and Tom is now learning how to be a doctor at McGill University Medical School. Bruce Bernstein and Miss Sheila Wachsberger will be married during the summer. Sheila is a graduate of NYU and at present is the assistant fashion, director of Gertz Department Stores. Bruce is now the Director of Guidance at Brooklyn Academy and has his Master's from NYU.
Some of those in the class who have recently taken the final plunge will now be immortalized. John Roberts and Miss Kathrine Dreyer were married in December. John and Kathy are now in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he is serving an intern year at the First Presbyterian Church in conjunction with the studies at Union Theological Seminary. The best man in the wedding was Jim Taylor while Arnie Mulder was an usher. George Walsh and Miss Janet Stebbins were married in February. Al Rollins was the best man in the wedding. Kent Whittaker and Miss Judith Cameron were married in Ann Arbor where Kent is completing his" studies at the University of Michigan Law School. Judith graduated from Pembroke and is now in her first year at the Law School. Tom Herlihy and Miss Constance Gay were married in Bryn Mawr and are now living in Charlottesville, Va., where Tom is attending the University of Virginia Law School.
Now you have read about the kings of the class. So that we may say we have talked of "cabbages and kings" let's find out what the cabbages are doing. I am still commuting to New York and have my office arranged to watch all of the skyscraper construction down the street. Harry Padgett has completed eighteen months of a three-year enlistment and serves as assistant chief of accounting operations at Ft. Sam Houston. Harry has recently been promoted to "First John." Chris Wren has returned from thirteen months in Korea where he was the assistant operations officer for the Fifth Cavalry. Chris is at Ft. Bragg and will remain there until his discharge in October.
I am sorry to have to report Of the death of one of our classmates, Bryce Moody. Details may be found in the Obituary section of this or a subsequent issue of this MAGAZINE.
