The summer is over and the typewriter is oiled for another year of the antics of the class. Congratulations on your part in the wonderful accomplishment in the attaining of the Capital Gifts Campaign Goal. I have a number of letters that were written during the late spring and summer so let's get right into the news.
Perhaps the best one to lead the year off is the world traveller John Berge who is now in Lisco, Neb. for a short stay before returning to Liberia for another eighteen months in October. On returning to the U.S.A. John passed through Lisbon, Stockholm (where he became engaged to Miss Else Maj Jansson), East Germany, Berlin, Munich, Monte Carlo, and London. Upon his return to Liberia this month he will follow the Rockefeller family's lead and marry Miss Jansson before plodding the deserts surrounding Monrovia.
I had the great pleasure of dinner with Randy and Kaye Patterson before they passed from the Navy on the West Coast and the Navy and Submarine Training at New London on the East Coast. Randy is also expecting to be a father later in the fall. Al Dessoff is working with the Washington Post. He has been there since the Army let him go last December. Then, as Al says, "I spent my first six months with the Post as a cub reporter, working often until three in the morning; then was promoted to my present position, Assistant to the City Editor, which gives me normal daytime hours, better pay and one helluvan interesting job." Al has also run into Larry Gardner who is playing the part of a whirlwind by working for the U.S. Senate, a law firm, and going to George Washington U. Law School at the same time.
Many moons have passed since we had smoke signals from Al Morrison who was working for Moran Tugboat lines. Since then Al has managed to break his leg and leave the sea completely for the calmer but windier waters of the stockbroker's office. He also decided to make the smart move for all good braves and set up tepee with his recently married squaw, Florence Walker. Florence's father, the late H. T. Walker, was in the class of '28. After the wedding Al will settle in Portland so all of you will know from whence should cometh hot stock tips.
Also in the blue chips business are John Holliday and Pete Barnes, both of whom are working for H. O. Peet & Co. in Kansas City. John was married in the spring to Miss Dana Gilmore and he mentions that Phil Byers and his wife Carolyn are living in Wichita, Kan., where Phil is working for Shell Oil. John Colenback peered over the footlights of the Canal Fulton Summer Theater during the hot season in hopes of seeing many of you spending your money to look back at him. John went to the wedding of Carl Schmidt and Miss Rika Kohler and as John says, "A few old grads had quite a time seeing them off during their intimate, candlelighted, honeymoon dinner at a cozy little Greenwich Village bistro. What a way to go!" This story has an interesting ending in that I saw Carl two weeks later standing in an Army chow line during the "lost two weeks" at Camp Drum each summer. Carl was mildly expressing his regret at being there.
Tony Dingman spent his second consecutive summer as a resident member of the Caravan Theatre at Dorset, Vt. He acted in five different plays, one of which was "The Lady's Not for Burning," staged and directed by George Schoenhut of the Dartmouth Players. Tony has a new position this fall, that of Instructor in English and Director of Dramatics at Worcester Academy, Worcester, Mass. For the past year and a half he's been English instructor, director of dramatics and student publications adviser at the Hoosac School, Hoosick, N. Y.
Lefty Scammon is working for the F. W. Dodge Corporation and lives in Portland, Me., where he is a combination reporter and salesman with the State of Maine as his territory. In the spring Lefty and Miss Barbara Wiggin were married. John Marino and David Crombie were ushers. John is living in Portland, where he teaches English at South Portland High School. Dave is at Tufts Medical School. Brian Coyne is at the University of Penn's Dental School where he apparently has a large off-campus apartment with other members of the teeth-making set.
I had a very fancy businessman's lunch with Tom Schwartz and heard about his new baby, Douglas Thomas, who was born April 2. Tom is now a commuting Westchesterite who works on Madison Avenue for Grey Advertising as an Assistant Account Executive. Frank Bruni has now completed the Navy and will return to Tuck School for his Master's. Joe and Jane Stevenson are still out in the Japanese rice paddies but Joe says that he gets to dry land often enough to have Japan agree with his golf game.
Now that you have sharpened your eyes and minds on this news sharpen your pencil and write me your news. Hope you all had a wonderful summer.
Best,
Skip
