With the advent of Labor Day weekend, everybody becomes busy. Change is in the air. The cool brisk breezes presage the autumn wonderland with its fiery foliage, the glorious fall madness of college football with its pompom peddlers and bustling crowds. See you in Hanover?

Jack Gunther's recent letter is reminiscent of the lazy summer days aboard the "Katina" in company with his spouse, Jerry, Captain Bill and Katie Andres in the environs of Marion on Cape Cod, a visit with Jerry and Marge Swope on their new boat at the same harbor, and another seafarer's holiday with Jack and Cynthia Blair aboard their newly-acquired cruiser - participation in a mixed golf tournament with Eke andBetty Walsh which was unproductive of silverware due to advancing senility - and sunning and bathing at the Darien Beach Club with Bob and Jeannie Brinkerhoff who have moved back from Chicago.

Herb Ball writes that he passed Jack on a New York street last week, so apparently all is well with the Air Reduction Company in spite of these atypical pleasures. Herb stepped into the Broad Street Club where he witnessed Ray Hedger buying a lunch for Bud Foulks. Upon return to his office at Johns-Manville Corp., he talked business on the telephone with Fred Poeter. Herb was recently elected vice-president and chairman of the program committee of the New York Chapter of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries. In June, he took his family to the West Coast to attend the annual meeting of the Society in San Diego. With his three sons, aged four, nine, and ten (he says "Hi, you old grandfathers"), and his wife Joan, he toured California with stops at the Zoo, Marineland, and Disneyland. He touches lightly on a side trip to Las Vegas. Upon return, Herb sent the kids to camp and spent a hot, quiet summer in New York, preparing mentally and physically for the daily crises of a father and the activities of the P. T. A. Herb reports that construction of the new Dartmouth club house at the Hotel Commodore is progressing rapidly with an October 1 target date for completion.

Dick and Lillian Exton arrived from Atlanta, Ga., for a few days in Boston during July. We had a delightful visit with them in company with our fellow townsfolk, Eddie and Louise Deans. In deference to their southern blood, we ignited the logs in the fireplace and the party waxed warm and jolly. Dick is an enthusiastic real estate magnate and Red Sox fan. From here, they traveled to Hanover, Montreal, and New York. In Hanover, they were received by Joe and Bea D'Esopo and from all reports they had a bang-up visit. Bob Monahan will be pleased to know that he does not look a day older than he did 32 years ago. They were sorry to miss John and Chris Dickey who were probably sojourning at their summer place in Swanton, Vt. John received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Bowdoin College in June.

Joe D'Esopo recently served on the jury as a peer of the defendant in a celebrated New Hampshire murder case. The jury was impanelled after seven long days of examining 111 veniremen.

Dicke Hunke, of Jersey City, N. J., has been elected president of the University Club of Judson County. Dick is a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve System in New York.

Bob and Adrienne Sparks of Westport, Conn., announce the marriage of their daughter, Nan Margaret, to Dr. Carl E. Hunter on June 24.

At 4 P.M., August 27, Miss Alison Tennant Strieder, of Chestnut Hill, Mass., became the bride of Phil Mayher's son, John Sawyer Mayher. The bride and bridegroom are 1961 graduates, respectively, of Smith College and Williams College. They will live in Cambridge where John is attending the Harvard Graduate School of Education. And by the light of candles in the evening of the same day, Miss Robin Fairbanks Foster, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. FrankPray Foster, was married to Mr. J. Lincoln Spaulding of Worcester, Mass. The bride is an alumna of Connecticut College for Women. Mr. Spaulding graduated from Dartmouth with the Class of 1956. They will make their home in Worcester.

Rumors from Woody have it that Boband Statia Ramage "stiff-upper-lipped" a similar performance for their daughter, Margaret, on August 19, and that Lyt andMaxine Johnston are "building emotional muscle against the shock of acquisition of a bride for their son, Robbie, come September 1." No further details are known. We would be interested to know if the brides wore illusions of veils and sleeves.

Woody also reports that Bud Foulks, the aforementioned beneficiary of Hedger's largesse, and the latest of our Benedicts, "eases through the executive mood and movements with no strain except on his philosophy." He warns that you cannot con him into clergymen's rates for American Express Travellers Cheques, but that he looks remarkably well for a man who waited so long to get married. On second thought, Woody wonders if it is so remarkable - you should see Lynne, says Woody.

For immediate release from the Avon Sole Company comes the announcement that John R. Hubbard, of Marshfield, Mass., has been appointed Sales Manager and Director of the Company.

Henry Schutte is a senior staff member in the engineering division of Arthur D. Little, Inc., at Cambridge, Mass., and is a member of the "Petro/Chem Engineer" editorial advisory Council.

Gustave E. Wiedenmayer has been appointed co-chairman of the "Ball of the Oranges." Inquiry discloses that this is a charity ball to be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Suburban in East Orange, N. J., on October 27 for the benefit of East Orange General Hospital.

Ed Merkel, Director of the Legal Division of Procter & Gamble Company, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the United States Trademark Association. Ed resides in Cincinnati where he is a Trustee of the Fine Arts Institute, Literary Club, and the College Conservatory of Music, and active in the Cincinnatus Association and the Citizens' Development Committee.

It is with sadness that we have learned of the death of Miss Christy Cogan, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David G. Cogan, of 30 Clark Street, Belmont, Mass. Miss Cogan, a 1961 graduate of the University of Michigan, was fatally injured in a highway accident. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Dave and his wife.
