Memorial Fund Chairman, JACK D. GUNTHER
Air Reduction Co., 60 E. 42nd St., New York 17, N. Y.
Last Saturday in the Yale Bowl turned out to be a good day for the team but as bad an afternoon for this column as it was for the sons of Eli. Up in the stands and along the approaches everyone was so camouflaged with foul weather gear that the only recognizable ones were outstanding characters like MoHeath, (who, by the way, is really as bald as Mike Ferrini). Mo's only complaint was that his backsides hadn't been that wet since his hockey playing days when his chief playmaking ability was keeping the rink dry with the seat of his pants. But otherwise he was in good form, as were companions Paul Jameson (he should be, he's "Assistant Treasurer of National Distillers) and Pete Lundgren of Los Angeles and Fox Films who flew East for the weekend. Between rain squalls, greetings were exchanged with (it seems) Bing Carter,Phil Mayher, Chris Born, Mike Sherman,Jerry Swope, Eddie Walsh, Jack Gunther and Bob Brinkerhoff.
The previous week at the Harvard Game it was Indian Summer weather and there was old Bill Dodge, all the way down from Quebec for his annual chance to cheer. Besides, there were brothers-in-law Jack Blair and Richard Francis Barrett, Dick Sanders, PhilRising, Johnny Davis, Dud Orr, Frank Foster,Ollie Holmes, Johnny Parker, Morton Jaquith, Herb Ball, Phil Mayher, Jerry Swope,Herm Liss, Squeek Redding and Chris Born.
The following sketch of Joe Losey is taken from the Film Daily's column "Who's Who in Hollywood:"
"Joseph Losey. Director. Born in La Crosse, Wis., on Jan. 14, 1909. Started to study medicine but found his high school dramatic activities carrying over into Dartmouth, where he was enrolled as a pre-med student. Became student director of Dartmouth's famed dramatic society, The Playersfounded by Walter Wanger. With his interest in the drama solidly rooted, continued dramatic studies at Harvard, where he received his M. A. in 1930. Tackled Broadway as assistant stage manager for Herman Shumlin's Grand Hotel. Then to Europe to study. In London, served as stage manager for Charles Laughton. When Laugh ton came to America for his stage debut in Payment Deferred, was his stage manager. In same capacity for Laughton on the Broadway productions of Fatal Alibi, and 15 years later for Galileo.
"Later in radio as producer. Made more than 50 educational shorts for the Rockefeller Foundation Film Project and functioned as producer-director of a two-reel documentary, A Child Went Forth, distributed by the Co-Ordinator of Inter-American Affairs on a world scale. Came to the attention of Dore Schary when he staged the Roosevelt Memorial in Hollywood Bowl, and the following year the Academy Award presentations. Went under M-G-M contract and directed the last of the 'Crime Doesn't Pay' series. Then Uncle Sam sent 'Greetings.' He directed films for the Signal Corps Photographic Center in the East. Out of uniform, returned to Hollywood and a contract at RKO with his first assignment, The Boy WithGreen Hair. Then The Lawless for Pine and Thomas. Now finishing Sam Spiegel's The Costof Living.
"Married since October 17, 1944 to the former Louise Steward. Stands 6 feet. Weighs 170 lbs. Hair, dark blonde. Eyes, grey."
Jim Kelley, veteran advertising man who set up the first Wheaties baseball broadcasts for General Mills, has been appointed an Account Executive with Griswold-Eshleman Co., assigned to the Agency's Louisville office.
On September 15, Karl Michael married Doris E. Gilbert, formerly of Hanover, daughter of Prof, and Mrs. Norman E. Gilbert, emeritus physics professor at Dartmouth, and presently professing the same thing at Rollins College, Fla.
Mason Ingram, formerly Assistant Bursar, has been named Assistant Comptroller in the course of a reorganization of the financial and business department of the College highlighted by the establishment of the new Office of the Comptroller.
Kingsbury Badger, Professor of English Literature at Boston University, delivered the keynote address at the National Conference of Universalist Laymen in the Unitarian National Memorial Church held in Washington, D. C„ October 12-15. His topic, "The Truths that Unite Us," was a strong plea for mankind to unite in a common religion against the destructive forces at work in this age of anxiety.
On June 9, in Washington, D. C., HerbBall married Miss Joan Cameron of Bradford, Pa. Mrs. Ball is a graduate of Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., attended Skidmore College and was graduated from the Barmore School in New York. She is associated in business with Clara Brod Lownes, Interior Decorator, New York.
Jack Blair is properly proud of his new law firm—Watson, Johnson, Leavenworth & Blair, with offices at 100 Park Avenue, New York. The formation of the new partnership followed the recent retirement of Jack's father from active practice and was effected by the merger of Jack's old firm with one of the oldest patent offices in the country. The new firm specializes, as did its predecessors, in the field of patents and trade-marks.
