Members of the Class already know of the sad loss we have suffered in the death on August 27 of Roy Merrill. A tribute to him appears elsewhere.

We are also compelled to chronicle the resignation, on doctor's orders, of our Class President, Ernest Bradlee Watson. He is so well known to many generations of Dartmouth men that no apologies are necessary for giving wide publicity to our deep sense of loss on being deprived of his leadership. The good wishes of the whole alumni body go with him as he leaves us to make his home for the rest of his life with his son's family in surroundings that he loves in the state of Washington.

On the lighter side, since Leland Griggs, equally well known to Dartmouth men as teacher, guide and friend, has already commenced his inimitable reminiscences in a letter to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE (Feb. 1961) by telling the story of Dr. Tucker and the bear, I am sure that he will forgive me if I record, without his permission, his story of the banana. It seems, to quote his words from a recent letter telling of his 83rd birthday, "I fared very well. ... I received five cards, a couple of neckties and a banana. Sixty three years ago on my twentieth birthday I bought a banana at the Tanzi fruit store. Fifty years later I reminded the Tanzis of this and from that time they have given me a banana on each birthday. To date I have had thirteen bananas 'on the house,' and I expect to have many more." We rejoice that our Class Valedictorian can still hold his own in arithmetic, and join him in thanks to the Tanzis and hopes for the future.
