James M. Reid '24, director of the Department of Programed Instruction of Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., has prepared and edited Poetry 230, privately circulated for tryout purposes. The programed booklet and accompanying response and test forms are designed to teach high school juniors and seniors how to read poetry in depth. Devoted to the study of a poem by Robert Frost and one by Thomas Hardy, and using materials written by John Ciardi and Laurence Perrine, Poetry 230 is believed to be the first attempt to apply a new instructional technique - programed instruction - to the study of poetry.
