Dartmouth athletic director Red Rolfe is the latest entrant in the basketball
rules derby. Last month the former baseball star and manager, who also coached basketball at Yale and later in the pro league with the Toronto Huskies, suggested a shooting time limit of 24 to 30 seconds during the last five minutes of the game. Object of the suggested rule change was to eliminate deliberate fouling as the end of the game approaches and, of course, to prevent the team which is leading from "freezing" the ball. There were no immediate reactions to Rolfe's suggestions, but watch for some tests on the new idea next winter.
Newly elected Captain of the Dartmouth varsity basketball team is William S. Shanahan of Strafford, Pa., a 6'4" forward, who crashed the lineup in the final five games of the season and was rated by Coach Julian as the "most improved player in the Ivy League."
