The period since the submission of the last column has witnessed a full measure of Fifty-four mailings. Among them was JimFisher's latest "Hazqui," Dave McLaughlin's letter on class activities (which, among other things, attempts to explain to a bewildered Jim Fisher how he got the job), and JackFeldman's exhortations for the current Alumni Fund. With regard to Alumni participation, President Dickey's "Report from Krakow" was, I thought, a grand statement of both the importance and the responsibilities of pride in an energetic and liberal educational institution. Please remember that responsibility during the current Fund drive, or Jack Feldman may sick Bob Woodberry on you.
First a couple of items from the overseas division of Fifty-four. Luke Case, wife Ann, and three tads have just settled in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Luke is working with Industria de Parafusos Mapri, SA, a subsidiary of The Lamson and Sessions Co. of his home town, Cleveland, Ohio. Luke, an old Spanish hand, is now energetically polishing his Portuguese for Brazilian commerce. Rumor has it that his Argentine Line boat trip down compared favorably with former outings on a Navy LST. From Paris comes news of Dr. Bob Spears, who, with wife Ann and son Robert, is enjoying the Gallic pleasures of that city and a NATO post-doctorate fellowship. Bob finished his pediatric residency at Los Angeles Children's Hospital and is now engaged in research on premature babies. The Spears will be in Paris until summer and then will travel in Europe before returning to California. And here's an intelligence from further than Phil Swartz's igloo in the Antarctic. Wilfred Bryan was working for M. A. Hanna Co., in Hibbing, Minn., but has recently set out for something a bit more adventurous, "like observing volcanic eruptions in New Guinea or looking for new mineral deposits in Queensland." On the way of implementing these plans, Wil has taken a position as a Senior Lecturer in geology at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia.
Other Fifty-four academicians are working on their graduate study programs. Pete Robinson is busy with his doctorate in geology at Harvard, Larry Taylor is winding up his studies in glaciology at Ohio State, and Roger Gilmore is enrolled at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. Dean Berry has forsaken the Midwestern business world for the austere joys of doctorate studies in economics at Columbia University.
Dick Major, wife Ann, and their identical twin daughters have followed a large number of classmates to the Lone Star State. They have settled in Houston, where Dick is a salesman with Haloid Xerox, Inc. Dick is also active with the Houston Ski Club, which must get relatively little action beyond the mentioned March outing to Winter Park, Colo. Ah, remember when Oak Hill was in the backyard. I imagine ski club participation in Houston is not all that strange behavior to another classmate, John Fairfield, who currently owns, sometimes sails, and is domiciled on a Chinese junk. John is also a senior associate engineer with IBM, but neglected to provide any information as to where all this takes place - near a coast I trust. Depending on your political persuasion you will be heartened or upset to hear that Bob McGrath finished in the same position he played for the Dartmouth baseball team, as the Democratic candidate in a race for the New Hampshire State Legislature - second. Bob and wife Donna live in Laconia, N. H., where he operates his own insurance agency.
In Pittsfield, Mass., Ed Fuller is now serving as a Specialist, Taxes, Insurance and Royalties with the General Electric Co. Jerry, June and young Craig Smith are living in Pittsburgh, Penna., where Jerry is a Labor Contract Administrator for U. S. Steel at their Irvin Works. Jerry is also working toward an M.B.A. at the University of Pittsburgh. Well to "the south, Bill Blacksher is President of the Government Street Lumber Co., Inc., in Mobile, Ala. Bill and wife Katheryne have two daughters, Katheryne and Lynn. In Grand Rapids, Mich., Joe Gruel is an attorney with Clolette, Perkins and Buchanan. Joe, Skip Weymouth, Steve Fast, and others of lesser classes have been trying to rejuvenate the Western Michigan Alumni Club. He wanted a plug for an April 21 dinner meeting - perhaps some area Fifty-fours will now know what they missed.
In Washington in April, a second daughter, Jennifer, was born to Jonathan and KatieMoore. And, finally, in preparation for the June deluge of wedding information, the engagement of Judith Ann Kahn to Dick Stienberg was announced in Larchmont, N. Y.
