JUNE 1963 JOHN G. CHRISTY, JOHN J. FELDMAN

It has been a heady time for a class secretary who often feels somewhat isolated from Dartmouth affairs off here in New Delhi. We have had two Fifty-fours as house guests - at the same time. The first was Jonathan Moore, who was in India completing the second half of a home and home series. Your secretary was sent off to Washington and the Pentagon on a brief assignment in mid-April, there to find lon as the new officer in charge of Indian affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The actual reunion occurred on the way, in a conference room in London, where others who had less of an appreciation for the legacy of the Earl of Dartmouth were trying to get down to business. While in Washington, I also had the added pleasure of staying with Jon, Katie, and their two children. Three days after my return to New Delhi, Jonathan arrived for a week's stay with us.

While in the Capital, the two dull bureaucrats saw how the class business moguls carry on when New York ad agency account executive John Heston breezed into town for some business and some lunch. Hes, who handles the American Express account for Ogilvy, Benson & Mather, seems to have seen most of you recently.

While Moore was with us in New Delhi, along came Lee Huff from Bangkok, Thailand, seeing India on vacation from his job, also with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, in Southeast Asia. Lee is enjoying his Thailand tour very much. He occasionally sees Barry Cox, who is flying helicopters with a private firm in Laos, and lives in Bangkok. The three of us agreed that the Hanover Plain next June would be a more fitting place and time to do our reunioning.

President Dickey announced in April that Seave Peters had been appointed to the new post of Associate Director of Athletics at Dartmouth, with administrative responsibility for physical education and intramural sports. Pete, who captained the 1954 hockey team, is currently serving as Assistant Controller of the College, and before that was Business Manager of Athletics. He will assume his new duties with the start of the academic year next fall. After graduation Pete served as an Air Force officer, assigned to the 33rd Supply Squadron at Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth, Mass. Many of you may have seen a new series of current event cartoons on the editorial pages of your daily newspaper by Jim Berry. The feature, "Berry's World," hits anything from cocktail parties to foreign affairs, and is distributed through the Newspaper Enterprise Association. Jim is a regular member of the NEA art staff in Cleveland.

Don Swanson was recently named a partner in his Dallas law firm of Storey, Armstrong & Steger. Having accumulated some Air Force service, a law degree, a wife, and now a law partnership in the Lone Star State, it would seem that Swanny has forsaken the East for our second largest state. Their gain. From Massachusetts comes word that Paul Mackey has been promoted to electronic analyst in the external programming division of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Springfield. Paul, who lives in nearby Holyoke with his wife and two children, has also been active in football officiating, the area United Fund campaign, and the Pioneer Valley Dartmouth Club' Also in the insurance business is Bill Squire with Home Life Insurance Company of New York, in Tampa, Fla. Doug Dodge has been elected assistant vice president of the Guarantee Bank and Trust Company in New York, where he will be working on commercial lending. He transferred from the Hanover Trust Company where he was assistant secretary.

Jerry Barton is finishing up as Chief Resident at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City, and will be opening up practice in orthopaedic surgery in Norwalk, Conn., in July. Peggy, Jerry, and Cathy! aged three and a half, will be moving to Westport, Conn.

Phil Anderson, formerly personnel manager for Standard Products Co. of Gaylord, Mich., is now Pittsburgh based as the newly appointed personnel manager for Mine Safety Research Corporation of that city. Phil, who had been associated with U. S. Ceramic Tile Company before going with Standard Products, earned a master's degree in industrial relations at the University of Michigan. A member of the American Society of Personnel Administration, he'll be responsible for all phases of personnel and safety administration at MSA Research.

Dick Buffington has joined the Collegeville, Pa., firm of Uniform Tubes, Inc., as assistant sales manager. Dick was previously with the Aluminum Company of America, as manager of its Akron, Ohio, sales office. Uniform Tubes manufactures seamless tubing and tubular components. Bruce Maclvor has been promoted to data processing manager for the East Los Angeles office of International Business Machines Corp. BobPrice is a salesman with the Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. in New York City, while in nearby Jackson Heights, N. Y., Neal Sibley is the manager-buyer for a children's wear firm of Rauch's. Phil Anderson has been named personnel manager for Mine Safety Appliances Company, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Phil was previously personnel manager for the Standard Products Company of Gaylord, Michigan. After graduation, Phil received a master's degree in industrial relations from the University of Michigan, and for a time was associated with the U.S. Ceramic Tile Company, in Canton, Ohio.

Mike Marx is the Democratic nominee for the City Council of Leonia, N. J. Mike, a chemist with Lederle Laboratories, has also been engaging in civic affairs as a member of the Board of Directors of the Leonia Community Chest. Pete Geithner, in Africa with the Agency for International Development, has transferred from Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, to a new assignment in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia.

In March, Rip Coffin, who is in Washington with the Bureau of the Budget, journeyed to St. Louis to marry the former Caroline Compton Clarkson. Rip was no doubt ably assisted in this endeavor by ushers Paul Dabney, John Heston, and Bob Flood.

The whole Class will be saddened to hear of the death of Bob Daly. Bob, an Air Force Captain, was killed when his jet fighter crashed during a night exercise near Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Bob, who reentered the Air Force last June, is survived by his wife Ellen and their four children.

A couple of our dwindling list of bachelors couldn't wait until June to leave that select company. In Dallas, Texas, Stan Klippi married the former Judith Elizabeth Pingenot back in March, while the previous month Steve Mullins married Carol Dolores Rian in Massillon, Ohio. In Rochester, N Y., Bob Bassett married the former Suzanne'Posson. Bob is a doctoral candidate at the Harvard graduate school of education. Finally, Dave Grogan is planning to take the same step. His engagement to Ann Parry Weser of New Canaan, Conn., an Emma Willard and Sorbonne graduate, was announced recently. Dave, who received a master's degree in business administration from Columbia in 1958, is an account executive with the New York advertising firm of Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample, Inc.

This is the last column of the publishing season and the last column for your present scribe, who will turn over this business to Bill White next fall, so that he can keep a closer tab on pre-reunion plans and report them to you. Whoopee! You have been very cooperative, especially since I have been in India. Thank you.
