Art Lewis, 1908's head class agent, received the James B. Reynolds Trophy at the class officers' dinner in Hanover on May 5, in recognition of his top performance in 1960 among head agents of classes more than 25 years out of college. The following citation accompanied the award:
Back in the year 1923, all of 38 years ago when many of the younger alumni here tonight were still unborn, you first became Head Agent for what was then one of Dartmouth's youngest classes. Here tonight you are in the midst of your 35th annual campaign on behalf of the Fund and the College, having served now for 30 consecutive years 'as Head Agent. During this span of leadership and service, the longest 'held by any Head Agent in the organization today, you have witnessed many changes in the Fund and in Dartmouth College. Your Class of 1908 is now a well-seasoned, veteran class. Its membership understandably has declined as you passed the half century mark two years ago; yet the record books reveal a vigorous class spirit belying the years. During the past fifteen years the Class of 1908 has always exceeded 100% of participation, and only once in the last decade has 1908 failed to meet its assigned dollar quota. Last year, despite some lingering complications of the Capital Gifts Campaign, 1908 raised more than $5,000, 135% of quota and recorded a 110% participation record. During the years when your class was in the Green Derby competitions 1908 placed consistently near the top, and there were very few years in which your efforts failed to produce, both an increase in contributors and in dollars. You, Sir, exemplify in all respects the great traditions of selfless devotion, patience and strength which have made our Dartmouth Alumni Fund one of the best in the nation. For these records and much more the Alumni Fund Committee is privileged tonight to honor you and your fine class with the 1960 award of the James B. Reynolds Trophy as the outstanding Head Agent of a class more than twenty-five years out of College.
