Thirty-six columns, thirty-seven In Memoriam's and 2,000 birthday cards later ... we close our scribe-ship as we began it"- with an awed awareness of the many services a good Class Secretary should try to perform, and with gratitude for the privilege of serving. To these should be added a sincere regret that limitations of time and travel prevented us from doing more; prevented us, for example, from being a first-hand news gatherer at football games and other Class and College occasions. We tell our children: - "Do your best; then no regrets." But we can't help thinking that several times, these past five years, our best was not quite enough. (So much for subjectivity!)
On the objective side, there's just one major highlight: - the announcement by the Institute of Early American History and Culture that Dr. Howard C. Rice Jr., was the 1962 winner of the Institute's biennial Manuscript Award. Howie won this honor for his translation and editing of the Marquis de Chastellux's "Travels in North America in the Years 1780, 1781 and 1782." The award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and the publication of the work. The newspaper release goes on to state that:
"Dr. Rice, who is curator of Rare Books and Special Collections of the Princeton University Library, was educated at Dartmouth College (bachelor's degree in 1926) and the University of Paris (Ph.D. in 1933). His book will be published in 1963 by the University of North Carolina Press for the Institute of Early American History and Culture, which is sponsored jointly by the College of William and Mary and Colonial Williamsburg, Inc."
And a few minor sparkles - The Smith College Development Program lists Mrs.Charles W. Abbott as Area Chairman for Buffalo, and Mrs. F. Jordon McCarthy for Maryland. Still on the distaff side, Mr. andMrs. A. Whit Blair announced the wedding of daughter Sandra Jean, April 22, at Newark, N. Y. A more masculine final note- The Lawrence (Mass.) Eagle-Tribune reports that Seward Tyler, Town Assessor for the past eight years, will run for that office in next fall's election.
