It is with a deep sense of personal loss that I report the death of Don Davis. Don passed away as the result of brain surgery last February in New York. According to his wife, Barbara, there was nothing that could be done, which makes his death all the more tragic. A more detailed account of Don's activities since College will be found in a later issue of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
It has been some time since I have exercised this most unpleasant facet of my job as class secretary; that of passing on to you news of the death of a classmate. And again it serves as a reminder of how fleeting life really is and how little time we have to do what we hope to on this earth. And now another classmate is gone; as a class we are the poorer.
I had a very pleasant note from Cliff Jordan some time ago reporting that Class of 1945 skied away with top honors in the late March Alumni Giant Slalom race held at the Dartmouth Skiway. Don Cutter, JackGile, Paul Glover, and Lee Stacey represented 1945 and all finished among the top twenty competitors to give the class the team trophy - a keg of beer. Although the above line-up smacks of professionalism, well done, men. Cliff also suggested that maybe more '45 members would be on hand next year.
In "late March the National Biscuit Co. announced that Bob Schaeberle had been advanced to the position of Assistant to the President. In his new post Bob will have a hand in all phases of Nabisco operations, in this country and abroad, and will undertake special projects and assignments. He joined the company in 1946 in the accounting department, rose to assistant con- troller in 1958, and became controller in 1960.
A nice letter from Dick Murray in Tucson reports on the status of his family and activities. Dick has five children ranging from the ninth grade to the first (sounds like a houseful), and is still at Amphitheater High School in Tucson, teaching Spanish. He also serves as Educational Chairman of the Arizona State AFL-CIO Education Committee.
Art Nichols has been promoted to Superintendent in the Data Processing Department at the head office of the American Insurance Group, Newark, N. J. Art joined The American in 1960 after ten years with Massachusetts Mutual, and has served as a representative to Guide, IBM's organization for users of electronic computers. Down in Philadelphia, Carl Tourtellot has been named by Scott Paper Company's industrial packaged division as assistant district manager in the Newark, N. J. market. Carl, meet Art Nichols.
I have news of an orthopedist and an ophthalmologist from Sarasota, Fla., and Savannah, Ga. They are Bill Hatt and FrankBousquet respectively. Bill reports visiting Massachusetts last fall and seeing Olie Passburg, who is teaching at American International College there, while Frank is President-elect of the Medical Staff of Chatham County Memorial Hospital and also practicing that old Savannah pastime of hunting birds.
BOXING THE COMPASS: Larry Davis is in Sales with DuPont Co. in Detroit. Also in Michigan are Joe Barss, practicing medicine in Port Huron, and Holt Ackerman in Battle Creek. That's all for now. Keep me posted in your doings and either I or the Newsletter will keep the class informed. And don't forget your contribution to the Alumni Fund. My heart aches when I see poor old '45 holding up the bottom in our competitive group. Surely you think more of Dartmouth and our class associations. It wouldn't take much to push up right to the top. But that, of course, is up to you.
