I think this month is supposed to wrap it up for the year. So, I'll try and get out all the "hot flashes" that have come in on the wires these past three or four weeks.
Pete Starzyk writes that he is still a confirmed bachelor up at Dow Air Force Base in Maine. But, evidently, through some mix-up, he is a Family Service Officer (which I suppose is a male counterpart of "Dear Abby"). Pete's only '60 contact up there is Mike Daley who is in Portland with State Mutual Life Insurance Co. Another member of the class from Maine, Nate Witham, is now in Puerto Rico training for the Peace Corps. He is slated for two years of duty in the Dominican Republic.
Mike Heitner sends news of the boys down at Yale Law. Alan Shauer is Assistant Editor of the Yale Law Report; PeteSchanck is the proud father of a baby girl; Bob Cooper is married, booking, and will work for the FTC in San Francisco this summer; Bob Argazzi is taking road trips, and Art LaFrance is down there too. Pen pal Mike also mentioned that he has been busy with crew - coaching Yale's Lightweight Frosh last fall and refereeing this spring.
A letter from Sam Bowlby tells of the life of a General's aide de camp in the Marine Corps. Sam, Rita and daughter Karen are picturesquely located in the middle of the Mojave Desert at Barstow, Calif. On weekends, multi-talented Sam picks up extra change by leading tours in nearby Calico Ghost Town. His Sunday special includes, at tour finish, a splendid rendition of "Streets of Laredo," sung by heart. All 60's passing through the area are invited to stop in for a free tour.
Fred Celce is proudly wearing his U. S. Air Force pilot wings these days, following graduation from pilot training at Moody AFB in Georgia. With the rank of second lieutenant, he is being assigned to Luke AFB in Arizona for further training. Fred flew T-37 and T-33 jet trainers during his year's course at Moody, and also went through special academic and military training. We salute you, Fred, and are glad to know you are up there protecting us.
Several weddings to report, including LewGoodman to Rhoda Lou Fleischman on March 10. The wedding was in Cleveland, but I have no information as to what Lew is doing for a living. Mike O'Keeffe and Emlen Jones were married in Wurzburg, Germany in early April. Mike's in the Army over there.
Mike and Sue Hollern had a baby boy (Scott) on April 1, out in Palo Alto. That makes one of each for them.
Roger Stephenson is a First Lieutenant in the Army Military Intelligence over in Groppinger, Germany. He reports cold weather, good beer, a new red sports car, and lots of time in the field. He will be discharged in November. Bill Hines is in the Far East as a Lieutenant in the Army. Bill is engaged to Jean Harnett and will be married in October. George Rush is now at Fort Dix, for basic training, after getting his master's at Columbia.
Ron Kley has just received a National Science Foundation award, and is in his second year at the Harvard Graduate School of Geology.
Well group, that about wraps us up for this season. As I leave Hanover this June I can't help thinking how different it is from' when we all left in June 1960. Hopkins Center is no longer a hole in the ground, but a rather huge and nearly completed member of that elite group of buildings that face the green. There are also four new dormitories behind Thayer School and one new math and psychology building behind the library that the undergrads have dubbed "Shower Tower." And out in deep right field of the baseball park they are putting up a really big field house and indoor sports building. Down at the end of fraternity row, next to Pi Lam, is the new Aquinas House that opened last month. Yes indeedy, many changes and additions in these short two years.
Keep the news coming in during the summer. I know there will be many marriages, discharges, births, and blasts that everyone will want to know about. Mari's and my plans are still a bit indefinite so I'd appreciate it if you'd send all info to Route 5, Excelsior, Minn. We'll be in Minneapolis at least until September and maybe permanently. Our only other definite plans are those of becoming parents the end of June.
Enough for now. Hope all have a healthy and relaxing summer.
