As this month's class notes are being prepared, Labor Day weekend is some twentyfour hours away. How many of you must be asking yourself where this past summer went. As all of us head into the third decade of our lives we become increasingly aware that each year seems to slip by us just a little faster than the previous one. Most of us probably didn't accomplish half the things we had hoped to do, but some must have proudly broken 90, water skied on a slalom ski, or possibly won a tennis trophy. In any event I do hope in some way it was a pleasant summer for all of you.
As Jack Christy informed you this past June, yours truly is taking over his secretarial duties down the homestretch toward our big tenth reunion. This was strictly a move of expediency, done in the interests of having someone in the New York area to collaborate closely with Tom Kelsey, our reunion chairman. Jack found it rather a harrowing adventure to run the column from India, and he most certainly deserves congratulations for a job well done.
It's interesting to see some members of the Class participating in the activities of various Dartmouth Clubs around the country. In Connecticut, Dick Page was recently elected president of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford. He is an attorney for the Travelers Insurance Company and a director of the TRC Service Corporation. Dick lives outside Hartford in Wethersfield. JackPierce, I learned last, week, is president of the Dartmouth Club of Maine. Dick Grassey and Pete Kenyon are both active in the Dartmouth Club of Bergen County in Northern New Jersey.
Charles Myserian was recently named a principal of the Boston insurance brokerage firm of B.R. Alexander & Company. Since 1956 he has been with the Robert B. Pitcher Agency of Boston, where he has specialized in life, accident and health and pension coverages. Chuck resides in Winthrop, Mass., where he is a vestryman of St. John's Episcopal Church, is active in the Cottage Park Yacht Club and the Winthrop Lodge A.F. and A.M.
Bill Dutton's going south, and although he'll get his share of sunshine and shrimp, that's not the principal reason. His employer, the industrial division of the Scott Paper Company, Philadelphia, has named him New Orleans district manager. Bill joined Scott in 1959 after five years with the Army Ordnance Corps. He began as a consumer representative and in 1961 was named an industrial salesman in the Newark, N.J., area. He is a member of the Southern Paper Trade Association.
Bruce McAllister succeeds Seave Peters as assistant controller of the college. Bruce assumed his new position on July 1; prior to that he had been with the public accounting firm of Ernst & Ernst in Buffalo, N.Y. Joe Mesics is West Coast sales manager for Piper Aircraft Corporation. Joe is in charge of sales operations for eight western states. He maintains his home and office in San Jose. The First National Bank of Chicago recently elected Joseph G. Migely assistant cashier in the commercial banking department. Joe is a director of the Northbrook United Fund and lives with his wife, Donna, and their two children in Winnetka, Ill. Bryce Bastian has been promoted from Singer Manufacturing Company's New Products Group to Diehl Corporation, which apparently manufactures electrical parts for Singer's. He has become a member of Diehl's president's staff to assist management planning for company growth. Here in New York City we have learned that AnthonyKane has formed a service organization specializing in executive personnel for the investment of banking communities. Tony's firm is called Anthony Kane Associates and will handle placement of personnel in the $12,000-and-up salary range. Edward Everett has been appointed technical field representative in northern California by Chemco Photoproducts Co., Inc., Glen Cove, N.Y. He will work out of Chemco's new Berkeley sales office and warehouse.
Earlier this year Peter T. Liebmann was named vice president for operations of the Liebmann Breweries, Inc. Pete's assignment as a vice president will be to supervise and coordinate the direction of operations at both the Brooklyn, N.Y., and Orange, N.J., breweries. He is a fifth-generation member of the Liebmann family to become active in the Brewery's management. A resident of Eastchester, N.Y., he and his wife, Cynthia are the parents of two sons, Andrew, 7, and Jonathan, 5. A subsidiary of Standard Oil in Japan announced this spring that Donald D. McCuaig joined the company as Manager, Investment Plans Department. The new Investment Plans Department will be responsible for analysis of the financial aspects of major investments of the company and associated companies.
During this summer Dick Gates passed through New York City on his way to Michigan affording us an opportunity to meet him for a luncheon. On hand at the time were John Heston, Dave Mandelbaum,Kent Klineman, and yours truly. Dick and his family were about to move to Grand Rapids where he was to become branch manager of the Old Kent Bank & Trust Company. At the same time, we learned that Ken Klineman was associated with the law firm of Jackson, Nash, Brophy, Barringer & Brooks. He specializes in the taxation field. Ken just got a Master's degree in taxation at New York University, and he holds an LL.B. degree from Harvard.
A few more classmates became engaged during the summer. Skip Grinton became engaged to Margaret Ann Sincere of Lake Forest, Ill. Ann, as she is called, attended the Latin School and was graduated from Kemper Hall and Bradford Junior College. Bill Robbins Jr. plans to marry a Canadian girl, Miss Meredith Mackenzie Gilmour, who attended Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School and graduated from McGill University. The prospective bridegroom is with the investment-banking firm of Kidder Peabody & Company. Oddly enough, another Lake Forest, Ill., girl will become the bride of another Dartmouth man, JohnL. Gillespie. The future bride is Miss Sandra Hamill Barnes and she too is a graduate of Bradford Junior College. In Rochester, N.Y., the engagement of Miss Mary Gill Roby to Mr. Edmund Lyon Kidd was recently announced. Miss Roby is a graduate of Miss Porter's School and Skidmore College. There's one marriage to report, that of Dave Grogan to Miss Ann Weser in New Canaan, Conn., on May 25.
Three New England universities conferred degrees on fellow classmates during the month of June. James L. Conrad Jr. was awarded a Master of Arts degree in history, government and international relations from Clark University during its 73rd Annual Commencement. Robert Collins Sleigh Jr. received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Philosophy at Brown University's 195th Commencement. Bob, one of 228 students who received advanced degrees, wrote a thesis on "An examination of Thomas Reid's account of our knowledge of the external world and other minds." Thomas Morton received a Master of Education degree at the University of New Hampshire.
Somewhere in the mails between India and New York City are two packages containing class records, class news, and various other information, all of which will be most helpful to a class secretary. Hopefully, the mailman will deliver them to me shortly, but in the meantime, I would like to appeal to all of you for news of yourselves.
