It's a strange time of year — an in-be-tween, quiet time of year. Gone is the spirit of the holiday season, and spring seems a long way off. Because of winter-enforced inactivity you feel yourself spreading around the middle, and hard work is the order of the day. Unless you are a skier or an avid squash player winters in the East are a kind of nuisance. With the crazy weather we have you find yourself fighting a cold, and for some reason it's difficult adhering to your New Year's resolutions. While we really can't be classified as old men yet, we can't afford to be too zealous in shoveling snow from the sidewalks and driveways. Oh well, it really isn't that bad - imagine the kind of winter Doggie Julian is having.
For you ski enthusiasts in the East, there is good news from Vermont. Herb Hillman has gotten out of the clutches of suburbia and ventured into the motel business. He, his wife Anne, and their three daughters have moved bag and baggage to Stowe, Vt., where they own and operate the Golden Eagle Motel. Just outside the center of Stowe, the motel is situated well back from the road leading to Mt. Mansfield. They have de luxe accommodations plus fourteen acres of land for children to romp over while their parents enjoy a magnificent view of the mountain. This growing recreational area has a great deal to offer in the summer also, and Herb reports that they do have a swimming pool. Nothing but the best and that's what we all wish for Herb and Ann.
Jim Fisher and his wife Nathalie held their annual holiday cocktail party this past December. Dick Franklin and his wife Gloria were among the guests who attended. Dick is with Albert Frank Guenther Law Inc., an advertising firm here in New York. Lon Chaikin was on hand, escorting a charming Pan American stewardess from Finland. Among the familiar faces I enjoyed seeing often this fall were Dave and Rosemary Mandelbaum, Tony and Barbara Kane, and the Klinemans, Kent and Jane.
It was my good fortune to run into Duncan Roberts not long ago during the evening commuter rush to New Jersey. After much friendly persuasion and coaxing I was able to learn some interesting facts about Dune. He is a security analyst with the Pension Fund of General Electric and enjoying his work very much. He and his wife Alison live in Chatham, N. J., and proudly announced in December the birth of their third son David, who joins Larry and Douglas. Every Sunday Dune can be found playing touch football with a group of guys who feel football is definitely a year-round activity. Dune was recently appointed to the Board of Recreation in Chatham and he is a director of the New Jersey Jaycees.
Almost all of us in the New York area had an opportunity during the holidays to see the beautiful Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. This year Rod Rockefeller was chosen to preside over the tree-lighting ceremonies and some of you may have seen him on television at that time. He was recently elected a member of the board of Rockefeller Center, Inc., replacing his uncle, John D. Rockefeller 3rd. Rod is vice-president of the International Basic Economy Corporation (IBEC), an investment and development firm with world-wide interests. He is in charge of IBEC's housing division.
Last November, in observance of Veterans Day and American Education Week, Captain Edwin J. Godfrey was the featured speaker at a banquet held in Elkins, W. Va. Ed is the officer in charge of Marine Corps recruiting for West Virginia and presently resides with his family in St. Albans. DaveMandelbaum recently received a nice letter from Mike Payson and forwarded it so I could pass on items of interest to you. Mike is just about to finish a one-year contract with the United Nations as consultant in Economic Planning to Togo. He pointed out that he didn't think many Americans realized how much progress has been made in our relations with the African countries. Plans call for him to be back in the United States in January, and he will then be employed temporarily by MIT as a research associate.
So far, I have news of two year-end weddings and one engagement. In Rochester, N. Y., M. Gill Roby became the bride of Edmund Lyon Kidd. The bride is an alumna of Miss Porter's School, class of '58, and Skidmore College, class of '62. Ed is vicepresident of Bailey, Potter & Kidd, Inc., an insurance brokerage firm in Rochester. Betty Lou Austin of Boise, Idaho, became the bride of Ronald Wagner in New Britain, Conn. She is a graduate of Washington State University at Pullman, Wash., and the University of Washington School of Librarianship at Seattle. Ron is a graduate of Vale University School of Architecture. The engagement of Suzanne G. Houle to Frank J. Carey Jr. was announced in Boston. The bride to be is a graduate of Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts.
The news is sparse this month. Hopefully, some of you will find a moment early in this New Year to drop me a line. And you bachelors don't forget, there's an extra day in this month and that's because it's leap year — behold or beware - take your choice.
