A rather sorry weekend to be penning these notes. Yesterday I watched the Green absorb their second defeat in a row up at the Yale Bowl, and it was not much fun. Before the game and after, however, our spirits were bolstered by much good fellowship with several classmates.
Jack Boyle arranged to have a stopping-off place at the Race Brook Country Club just outside New Haven where the Class executive committee met before the debacle and where we reconvened afterward with other members of the Class and members of other classes around our vintage. I'll write up the meeting we had before the game and forward it to Marcel Durot so you can see what directions we'd like to see the Class progressing.
The news this month is pretty skimpy so it's a good time to give a pat on the back to all our classmates who are officers in Alumni Clubs around the country and who are members of the National Enrollment Committee. It's a very impressive list and without making a complete collation I'll go out on a limb and say I doubt that any other class can top us on number (or quality) of members active in these two important alumni functions.
But first I'll run through the few items of news I have this month. Ed Baldridge informed me at the game yesterday that I had made another error in reporting that he had just received his Master's degree this past spring. Actually it was his Ph.D. Ed received his M.A. several years ago and is now an assistant professor of history at Muhlenberg College.
There are three new births to report this month and it sure is the year of the male child. First, Bill Nichols' wife had a son, named William Scott, last July 28 in Chelmsford, Mass. Then Marsh Smith's wife had a son, Gregory Mark, on September 30, in Brookline, Mass., their second child, first boy. And just last week Larry and Betty Scliiffenhaus had their second son (to go with four girls) and named him Peter. We also heard the rumor that Gene andMary Teevens had their seventh recently but this has not been confirmed.
And now to the officers of the Alumni Clubs and Associations. First there's DekDavidson, treasurer of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers. Next is Howie Smith, president of the North Shore Dartmouth Club in Mass. Then Gene Teevens, president of the Dartmouth Club of Springfield, Mass. Then Steve Parkhurst, secretary of the Mystic Valley club in Mass.
Then out to Minneapolis where KentCalhoun is president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Northwest. Thence back to New Hampshire and Con- cord where John Barto is secretary of the Merrimack County Association.
Next it's contrary-thinking Jim Fraser, president of the Glens Falls, N. Y., Dartmouth Club. Then we have our man in Rochester, N. Y., Henry Williams, who is secretary of that city's club. And not far away Don Staubes is secretary of the Mohawk Valley Dartmouth Club out of Utica, N. Y.
Out in Ohio we have things pretty well sewed up with John Klein installed as secretary of the Cleveland Association; Ben Hadley, in Columbus as secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio; and JohnMcWilliams in Toledo as secretary of that city's club.
The Portland, Ore., Club seems to be all '52. With John Crowell as president and Campbell Richardson as secretary I'd say we're well represented. Back East in Pittsburgh we also find a president's chair occupied by a '52. The Western Pennsylvania Club has Nate Parker Jr. for president.
We've even infiltrated the Lone Star Republic. Our own John Doty is secretary of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of North Texas headquartered in Dallas. Back close to the mother lode we find SamDaniell as president of the Ascutney Dartmouth Club in Springfield, Vt. And even outside the country we find '52 helping run things: George Jenkins is secretary of the Quebec Alumni Association in Montreal.
On the National Enrollment Committee we also have many classmates, some being repeaters from the club officers list, such as Sam Daniell, enrollment committeeman in Southern Vermont. The others and their districts are: Ed Lyon, North Shore, Mass.; Steve Mandel, Southwestern Connecticut; Dave Griggs, South Carolina; Jim Leiter, Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri; JohnHoeven, North Dakota; Ed Smuckler, Western Washington; Pete Zischke, Central California; and George Moerlein, Alaska.
So a Wah-Hoo-Wah for all of these guys and one special one for the Class that produced so many leaders for so many parts of the country.
Till we meet again I want to remind you to write if you get work, and admonish you to have a Happy Holiday season. Good-bye till next year.
