Featured in a November special Boston Sunday Herald advertising supplement was Johnny Koslowski looking lean and ready for nine innings behind the plate. John manages the water cooler and filter department for Boston Filter Co., large heating, air conditioning, and filter concern. Kos previously taught and coached at Governor Dummer Academy and Belmont High School, and left school work in 1952 to join Boston Filter. Besides being a fair golfer (he has not been forgiven for passing up our last reunion for a golf tournament) Kos is a vice president of the Sales and Marketing Executives of Greater Boston. He might encourage Boston Filter expanding to Philadelphia whose city fathers plan adding fluorine to the drinking water as soon as they find room.
Good news reading that Paul Randall has been named manager of the Export Department, International Division, United Shoe Machinery Corp. Paul has been with United Shoe since 1946 and lives in Hingham, Mass. At Dartmouth Paul was an English major who forsook truth for Tuck and established a foundation for business by being one of Thayer Hall's better waiters. Congratulations and luck to you, Paul, in what sounds like an interesting job.
Bankers never lose interest, I'm told, especially at the Chemical Bank New York Trust Co., which just appointed John Burleigh vice-president and head of investment analysis in the trust investment department. John graduated from Tuck School and N.Y.U. Graduate School of Business.
Fred Wallis, Commander USN, is captain of the "USS Wren" DDS6B, home-ported in Galveston, Texas, with the primary mission of training area Naval Reservists. Excepting two years with Standard Vacuum Oil Company in Calcutta, India, Fred has made the Navy his career since leaving Dartmouth. From World War II (he landed the first troops in the Philippines - Company D, 6th Rangers at Saluan Island, October 17, 1944) he has served tours at Naval Reserve Training Centers, the Military Mission to Turkey, and on the staff of the Commandant, Fifth Naval District. Fred is married to the former Bodil Amitzboll of Copenhagen, Denmark, and they live at 2608 39th Street, Galveston with their sons, Lars Allen, 9 and Frederik Woodward, 8. Fred might look up Ed Tuffly, Warren Dale, Carey O'Connor, and Bill Thaxton, all in Houston.
Took me a while to understand why I received the "Poway News Chieftain" from distant Poway, Calif. Publisher D. VanQuackenbush sent it to show him photographed receiving the 1962 John Swett award by the California Teachers Association for "continuous accurate coverage of school developments and achievements. By attractive use of photographs and excellent typographical layout, even routine educational news achieved high reader interest." The award is named for John Swett, often described as the father of public education in California and was the first professional educator to serve as state superintendent of public instruction. Van's paper is bright in content and presentation. The stories told are those told in every town — teen-agers killed in a car wreck; a profile on a happy town librarian who, since she loves books, might as well live with them; an account of the Square Dance Club - events commonly joining Poway and Pottstown and your town. Van's masthead has more than a coincidental Dartmouth touch.
Thanks to John Sant for answering my letter. The percentage of replies is low! John has been with Universal-Rundle Corp. in New Castle, Pa., for about fifteen years at locations including Camden, N. J., and Chicago, Ill. John was with Sears-Roebuck in Chicago (parent company of Universal-Rundle) returned to U-R as manufacturing vicepresident, and became president in February, 1962. Universal-Rundle manufactures a complete line of cast iron and vitreous china plumbing fixtures distributed through wholesalers to plumbing contractors. With plants in Camden, New Castle, Hondo, Texas, and Redlands, Calif., John must do some traveling to keep with it.
From Paul Harvey in California: "I finished training in orthopedic surgery in 1954, practiced in New York City and taught at Cornell. In 1957 I spent eight months in Uppsala, Sweden, doing research, then returned to New York. In July, 1962, I accepted a full-time post at the University of California as associate professor. The medical school is undergoing extensive reorganization and is improving its teaching by use of full-time personnel. I was married in 1958 (one of the last in the class, I imagine) and now my wife and three daughters are enjoying life in San Marino, a part of L.A." Paul's address is 1200 North State Street, L.A. Have you noticed what a West Coast delegation '43 has developed?
Ruth and I had a happy New Year's visit with Bob Gray, lovely wife Susy, and their four nice children. The Grays live just across the Maryland line from Washington where Bob practices law. As a retired birdman, Bob reminisced with me about former shipmates and even produced a picture of the administration building of Whitney Field, Fla., a place I never expected to see again. While in Washington, I chatted by phone with Jerry Blanchet, who has large plans for '63 - among them, I hope, another visit with us in Pottstown. Bill Robinson was married to Cynthia Lovejoy Underhill on November 24, 1962 at Southampton, Long Island. Bill publishes weekly newspapers on eastern Long Island and is presently a major, U.S. Air Force Reserve. The Robinsons will live in Westhampton Beach.
Thanks to all who sent us Christmas greetings and for the nice comments about the column. A labor of love (now being written at 10 P.M., 12,000 feet above Parkersburg, W. Va., en route to Cincinnati) needs help from you with facts and pictures. Thank goodness the Ernie Sauls are few and far between.
