The Holy Cross team which took the field that day was big, fast and tough and it took only a few minutes to enlighten the Green that its dreams of an undefeated season could be shattered. But the Indians refused to go down without a fight. Four times in the first half the Crusaders were stopped inside the fifteen-yard line, twice on downs and twice on fumbles.
The Cross finally managed, however, to break into the scoring column early in the second quarter. The Big Green was forced to punt from deep within its own end zone and when the ball was passed from center, it went high over King's head, a fence and up into the bleachers. Holy Cross was awarded a safety.
In the third quarter a Dartmouth fumble on the Crusader 35-yard line set up the first touchdown drive of the afternoon. The Cross covered the 65 yards in twelve plays and became the first team to cross the Dartmouth goal line. A twopoint conversion was good and the Indians were down 10-0.
The Green at this point came to life. On the secofld play from scrimmage King uncorked a long pass to end Carl Funke who outdistanced the Crusader secondary, grabbed the ball, and raced for the goal line. A two-point conversion attempt was no good and Green trailed 10-6.
The Indian defense stiffened and on the last play of the* thirds quarter, Dave Evans, who had replaced an injured Jim Lemen at fullback, intercepted a Crusader pass on the Holy Cross 34. In ten plays the Green had another touchdown as Krumme went the final ten yards on a pass from King. Wellstead's kick was good and the Green led 13-10.
The Crusaders then took the kick-off and began to march. Starting from their own 26, they went unchecked until they reached the Dartmouth 28. There a penalty set them back to the 43, where it was third down, 23 to go. Pat McCarthy, who had demonstrated his ability as passer all afternoon, again took to the air. While the Green covered the Crusaders' top receiver Tom Hennessey, McCarthy looped a short aerial to fullback Dave Holborn, who went thirty yards to the Dartmouth thirteen.
Two plays later, McCarthy connected with halfback Al Snyder in the end zone on a catch that was spectacular. The point after was good and the Green trailed 17-13. That was it, as the clock ran out on the Big Green.
