Have no fears about reunion! Like friendly old Nationwide Insurance, you're in good hands, because reliable old BertMacMannis is at the helm. As Reunion Chairman, he has a committee as long as your forearm bristling with more ideas than the Christmas issue of Reader's Digest. DickJackson has designed special stationery, has agreed to handle publicity, and you'll be hearing more from his department. We even have a committee labeled "Beer and Student Assistance," head of which we'll announce later, but you must admit we are at last out in the open with the merger of basics that make sense.
Reunion is only a little over a year away and we have been worried that the ball might roll too late, but we are now reassured that all is well. It is now up to each of us to set aside June 18 through 21, 1964 on our mental block calendars and lay plans for timing and financing ourselves to Hanover. And not just ourselves, but our class too! More of that later. Junie Merriam, fresh from his second trip to Japan this season, has written all of his class agents about the task ahead. (Only it's spelled TASK AHEAD!)
Operating on the theory that if we write some letters we might get some answers, we explored this unusual approach and batted about .300!
Bill Coleman, ex of Kenilworth, Ill., and now living on Birchwood Drive, Greenwich, Conn., recently severed relations with Curtis Publishing after 12 years and moved east to become a franchised distributor for Van Loon Bros., dealers in business services, accounting, tax advice, etc. "Although I still have an interest in this work, my main efforts are now employed on behalf of the Gotham Planning Corp. located at 124 E. 40th St., N.Y.C. This company engages in financial planning for individuals; underwrites securities, and deals in securities and all types of insurance.
"I still like skiing, and last week took my family to Bromley in Vermont. Good being back east. . . . Whatever became of my old roommate Wm. Forest Lee from Ithaca and Bob Barvoets from Albany? If you write any of them, have them drop me a line " (Bill, Dr. W. F. Lee Jr., 7 Madison Ave., Saratoga Springs, N. Y. Current address for Robert R. Barvoets: 15 Colonial Green, Albany 11, N. Y. - signed, Abbe.)
We had occasion to write Boots Hoskinson recently, who replied with an essay on the advantages of listening. Apparently Junie visited him several months ago and filled in wife Teddy, sons Ted and Hilleary Jr., with early postgraduate Hoskinsonia best left buried on W. 64th St. Boots is assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of National Geographic and is frequently credited with having assembled the first complete skeleton of Tyrannosaurus Rex, - next year's Mardi Gras king.
Seeking a philosophical pattern for Alumni Fund giving has led us to correspondence with Dave Lilly, who refutes hit or miss donations in this case. He favors the reviewing of past giving, with adjustments as required" followed by a new gift schedule based or. projection. In the case of our class, we would be fortunate to have more of this thinking. Dave apparently manages Toro Mfg. Corp. much the same way, as attached news releases indicated. From pre-war sales of one million dollars. Toro has grown to sales last year of $22 million. They have recently embarked on a six-year program of diversification and acquisition aimed at increasing sales to $50 million by adding budget-priced automatic lawn sprinklers, utility carts, and snow removers to their present top flight line of lawn mowers. (Notice how subtly we combine business, pleasure, and gratitude!)
One of our anonymous correspondents literally ran into Bill Tucker skiing at Sugarbush, Vt., over Christmas week. He was described as being in rare form and nursing numerous bruises - all very reminiscent of an undercooked cubed steak.
Ralph Sperry has been made vice president of the City Trust Co. of Bridgeport, Conn. He is also president of Hall Neighborhood House and vice president of the East Bridgeport Trade and Civic Association, and vice president of Mill Plain School.
In a round-about way we have learned Harry Gates is going to Georgia to open a new church. It will be a very small one at first and he contemplates augmenting this effort with a selling job. Since we have long admired his single-minded convictions, we wish him great good luck in this new endeavor.
