Cliff Bean '16 (c), shown with President Dickey and Alumni Council president Carter Strickland '29, received the Council's highest honor, a Dartmouth Alumni Award, at the January banquet in Hopkins Center. In making the presentation Mr. Strickland read the following citation:
H. CLIFFORD BEAN '16
Throughout your life you have put service to Dartmouth College among important things to be done, just about every day. You have achieved outstanding success in the field of labor relations, filling this top position with William Filene's Company in Boston for many years until your retirement in 1959. You have been a lecturer on labor relations at colleges and universities.
Your good works include special' industrial services to the government during the last war, Navy service in World War I, a director and member of numerous civic and community boards in your town of Hampton, New Hampshire.
But in Dartmouth service the name of Cliff Bean is legendary - first as secretary of the Class of 1916, then president; chairman of your Class Fund; officer of the Boston Alumni Association; member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for six years and its vice-president; and as long-time, lifelong worker on enrollment and admissions activity in the Boston area. You interested Edward Lincoln Filene in the College; he became an honorary member of your class, and you spoke eloquently about this friend and benefactor of Dartmouth at the dedication of Filene Auditorium here on the campus last spring.
The Alumni Council is delighted to honor you with the Dartmouth Alumni Award for a full life of devoted service to this College.
