If anyone needed proof that the 1940 wives are as loyal and Hanover-oriented as their husbands it was evident last weekend when the Dartmouth Class Officers had their meetings. Our class was one of the relatively few to have five officers in Hanover and each one was accompanied by his better half. It wasn't all work, however, for Gina and Diz, Ruby and Don Rainie, Kayand John Moore, Lorraine and Sam Williams, and Crosbie and Bob MacMillen who all found time to enjoy a lovely spring weekend. It was a Saturday afternoon full of lacrosse games, tennis matches, an extrainning ballgame, and crew races and then Janet and Seymour Wheelock and Inez andJack Schleicher joined forces for cocktails and dinner.
Our Man in Missiles, Major Derrill Trenholm, reported that two classmates showed up at Vandenberg AFB last spring when he had arranged a tour of the base. Trenny hosted Ned Jacoby and Don Shippam and there was even a missile launching to remember! Come June, Trenny winds up his duty in California and joins SAC Hq. in Omaha.
In one way or another 1940 has been keeping the population Direct contributors are Ann and Bob O'Brien who just welcomed a bouncing baby boy into their family circle. Contributors-once-re-moved are Betty and Johnnie Crandell who will be grandparents for the second time in June. It's later than you think! The Crandells came to Hanover to spend Easter with the Walter Crandells '34 and were dismayed to find the apartment house which they occupied as undergraduates had been torn down to make way for a parking lot. Progress comes to Hanover!
Our most famous author, Page Smith, continues to win awards and honors for his two-volume biography of John Adams. The latest is Columbia University's 1963 Bancroft Prize for American History. It could qualify as his favorite too, since it not only is a recognition of high honor but it also carries with it a cash stipend of healthy proportions.
Another Californian in the news - and with a picture in the paper to prove that he's still a gay blade, is Phil Dostal, pictured at a San Francisco party dazzling his dinner partner who turns out to be Shirley Temple all grown up and still winsome.
New jobs have attracted two of our group. Frank Whaland, who is one of New Hampshire's few CPCU's, a distinction all you insurance men will recognize, has joined the Henderson & Marshall Agency in Nashua as vice president. And Beezie SmaJlwood is now sales manager for Atlantic Cement's manufacturing plant near Albany. He is operating a new concept of distribution of cement along the eastern coast, which is revolutionizing the marketing of this product. Ruth and Beezie are temporarily back in Cooperstown, while they check the housing situation in the Albany area. Their eldest, Lacey, is a third year graduate at Colby Junior this month, while Bob and Pam keep mom and dad busy with teen-age activities at home. Keith Benson, who hasn't been vice ' president and assistant to the president of Pickands, Mather & Co. very long, has been elected a director of Interlake Steamship.
The next time you're in Phoenix and wish to climb Camelback Mountain for a magic-carpet view of that sprawling city, call Bob Marshall who strides to the top in easy steps. He and Traudy are other recent parents since last August when Hanke arrived to join Bamber.
A nice note from Bob Tatgenhorst, legal eagle from Cincinnati, confirmed intentions to make the 25th Reunion. Tag and Louise and their four boys got close to the College recently by entertaining several Glee Clubbers on the spring tour.
Dr. Howard Oliver has been named to the staff at Keene (N. H.) Teachers College as research associate in the science department. Howie is a pathologist at Elliot Community Hospital and the two institutions are expected to join forces in cooperative venTURES In his spare time Howie is president of the Cheshire County Medical Society and consulting pathologist at Monadnock Community Hospital. Sounds as though anybody getting sick in the state of New Hampshire and Dr. Howard Oliver would know about it!
A busy guy in the community affairs of Baton Rouge is John Reitzell who has just been elected head of the United Givers Fund quota and admission into the Fund and review their budget requests. His decisions, of course, will determine the size of the campaign goals. Johnny is a partner in an insurance firm as well as vice president of the Citizens Savings and Loan. He has been district chairman of the Boy Scouts, who gave him the Silver Beaver Award for his many volunteer hours.
Word has come from Connecticut that one of our classmates, George Burleigh, drama coach at Plainville High School, entered his troupe in a state-wide drama festival vying with 19 other schools for top honors. George has taught English, speech and drama for 21 years in Plainville, which indicates complete enjoyment with working with youngsters. He serves as president of the Connecticut Drama Association and state director of the National Thespian Society.
