If this issue of the Magazine got off the press on schedule, and wasn't held up too long in the mail, you still have time to make the Princeton game on October 14. This will be followed by an informal class reunion at the Norwich Inn. As usual our man in charge of arrangements is George Browne, so if you have not already notified him that you are coming please do so He is in Norwich, Vt., and his phone number is 802-640-1924. Plan to stay for dinner but if this is impossible, at least stop by for the happy hour immediately following the game.
At the class officers meeting in Hanover last May, Jud Pierson was elected president of the Association of Class Bequest and Estate Planning Chairmen, and Wes Beattie was elected president of the Class Agents Association. At the commencement luncheon of the General Association of Alumni held on June 10, Fran Harrington was elected vice president. Congratulations!!
John Monagan, John Rockwell, BillScMesinger, and Fred White had sons graduating in the class of '72. John Rockwell, still living in Oak Park, Illinois and a partner in the Chicago law firm of Leibman, Williams, Bennett, Baird and Minow writes: "Son John, graduated in June. Commencement was great—a colorful pageant on the Baker lawn with short speeches, cloudless skies and temperature in the high fifties. Professor George Theriault stood out in his red gown. He and Rae seem to be enjoying life and it was good to see them. I have known some of John's friends for four years now and I am very much impressed with the job the College is doing. Thank goodness the College is changing. In 1933 if we had been told that the 40 year class ('93) was upset because the College had changed from their day, I think I know what our response would have been. John worked at WDCR, the college radio station, during his four· years in Hanover. He wants to continue in that field and has taken a job as an announcer at WCNL in Newport, N. H. Daughter Nancy, after Grinnell and a brief try at VISTA, got her Master's in Political Science from Rutgers and is now halfway through her MSW (Master, Social Work) program at the Jane Addams School, U. of Illinois, Circle Campus. Her field work is with the Wheaton police department, working with juveniles — a very interesting and innovative program. The practice of law seems to demand more time every year. At the moment my chief extra activity is on the Oak Park Community Relations Commission. Oak Park adjoins a rapidly changing section of Chicago and the challenge of successfully integrating our village and maintaining its quality is very interesting and important. Thanks to strong support from the Village trustees and the broad participation of citizens, I think we're doing a good job. It's that continuous Process of change, again, of trying to direct change, rather than leaving it to chance. Phyllis and I are looking forward to the 40th next June."
As many of you know, Wes and JanBeattie have wanted to live in the Hanover area for a long time. The opportunity presented itself when the Vermont and New Hampshire sales territory of George T. Mann Co. opened up and Wes grabbed it. He has retained some of his old accounts in Massachusetts. They have sold their home in Melrose and purchased a condomininium on 4 Willow Spring Circle in Hanover.
And speaking of Wes, naturally reminds us of the Alumni Fund. We reached 94.6% of our dollar quota and gave $52,478 — $665 more than the previous year — but we fell down in our participation with only 334 contributors — 17 less than the previous year.
Mel and Mary Hershenson are the proud grandparents of their first grandchild — a boy born in Orlando, Fla., on March 25. He is already enrolled in the class of '93.
It was nice to hear from Bill Gillies in Pittsburgh: "No special news. Have been in Kennebunk Beach, Maine at our summer house off and on all summer. Actually am retired from active business but on the boards of a number of charitable institutions and church — generally catching up on all the things I never had time for before. Reunion sounds great."
Apparently Marion Henchey and Virginia Tozier have fully enjoyed their previous sessions of the Alumni College because they came back again this year. John and Jean Meek made a long trek so they could attend for the first time.
We'll be celebrating our 40th Reunion next June. Bill Dewey and his committee are already hard at work making plans for this gala event. You'll be hearing from him before long, but in the meantime start planning to be in Hanover in June.
The mailman has not been overburdened delivering mail from you fellows this summer. My news' file is empty so how about sending along a few lines. If you're too busy — or modest — how about your gal Friday doing it!!
