Good, bad or mediocre, the 1964 Dartmouth football team will have its progress followed by more people in New England than ever before in history.
The Dartmouth Football Radio Network, now in its sophomore season, has been expanded to 21 stations throughout that region.
The major addition has been WHDH, a 50,000-watt signal from Boston recognized as New England's foremost sports station. The Boston Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics are colleagues with Dartmouth in WHDH's year-round athletic coverage.
The realignment of the Dartmouth Network, growing from the 14 stations during last season's debut, insures radio reception of Big Green football at every point of New England. It also gives Dartmouth the distinction of having the only regional college football network in the nation.
There were anxious moments this summer as the D.C.A.C. in collaboration with WVTR in White River Jet., Vt., prepared this unprecedented coverage. A year ago Fred Daley '44, owner of WVTR, sustained a considerable financial loss as he went ahead with the network despite only half sponsorship (Gulf Oil Corp). This season Daley generously waived airing of the Dartmouth football games by his own station to permit WDCR, the College's student station, to have exclusive coverage in the Hanover area.
The Gulf Company, under the impetus of Len Elden '32 in its New England headquarters, and the Top Value Stamp Co. of Dayton, Ohio, are the sponsors of the Dartmouth football network this fall.
Announcers on the network will be Don Gillis, noted sports announcer for WHDH-TV, and Doggie Julian, colorful Big Green basketball coach and football authority.
