A nice letter from Ed Shidwell giving a little information about himself but a lot more about "Smiokey Joe" Adams and his very interesting "doings" in Japan now that he has retired to that country. The material in the letter is interesting and will be forwarded to Bill Benger for use in his Newsletter since he has more space allotted than I have.

Ed Stokes has called several times recently, and it's wonderful to be able to report to you that after having been out of commission physically for several years he's on the mend and back in the automobile business again. His tremendous interest in sports constantly breaks out in his conversations and boy, does he still root for Dartmouth? I'll say so! Ed is particularly interested in encouraging young folks to get into athletics and has, over the years, done a lot of Little League and other work of that nature. His health isn't of the best, but when he referred to the forthcoming games to be played at Hanover he said, "I'm going to get there one way or another." Glad you're back in action, Ed!

Bill Steck's son Peter (also Dartmouth grad) was married Saturday, September 5 in Cleveland and the event gave Johnnieand Betty Goodwillie a reason "to come over from Chicago." John's company, Dole Valve, has been acquired by Eaton Manufacturing Company of Cleveland and Peter's new father-in-law is an executive of Eaton so there was another reason. Ed and TrudyFlynn also were in attendance at the wedding. This gets to be quite a tie-in deal since Bill Jr. worked for Ed's architectural firm for awhile. Son Bill is doing his terminal project at Harvard Graduate School of Design this fall.

Bill Wilson had lunch with GeorgeNickum, reports George was on his way to Hanover and was in fine fettle. He reports that Ed Maas has joined Carl Byoir and Associates "our public relations counsel and the largest in the country, as a member of the financial department." He "bumped into Dutch Holland on the train to Philadelphia the other day. He looked great and we had too brief a chat because I was disembarking at Princeton." Bill enclosed a card from Dick Holbrook which warrants reproduction in full as follows, "For some days I have had your class letter in my unanswered mail drawer. Wanted to congratulate you for a well conceived and masterfully executed letter about our Fund Drive. If the advanced special gifts committee was your gimmick - kudos to you. Next June is not so far away that I can't promise myself a trip East then, the good Lord willing. It will be a joy to see you both and other good and green friends to tell of the wondrous healing powers of this good dry climate.

"It was sad news to hear of Hoppy's death, but a passing such as we all would like. Pete gets a one-man show in Chicago at the Gray Galleries in November. We will be anxious to see it. Maybe on to Boston and back via NYC."

Hope you'll make time to see some of us Bostonians when you do hit Boston, Dick.

Johnnie Benson got some notes returned with class dues payments. One from LukeWatson says "Doug Wilson was off on a trip when I went through Armiston, Ala., on the way to visit wife's relatives in Kansas. Made an annual trek to Hanover for golf, but had time only for the 27 holes. Mother wrote a week ago that Charles Babbitt (my ex-roomie) stopped by to see Mary and me at our place in New Hampshire but we were already back in South Carolina. Am hoping that we'll have a big group reunioning next June and that Mary and I'll be able to be there. Regards to Boston 31ers."

Another from Bill Steck says he's staying at the Chieftan over the Princeton game. One more from Vic King with some mighty interesting comments about railroads as follows: "Here's my dues check for D 31. Sure hate to see the railroads go! Down here we are convinced highways will never supply mass transport. It takes me seven hours to drive to my New Hampshire home and five hours in taxi and plane. A good passenger route could surely be devised that would do as well as this and be sure. The last time I had to 'Avis' from Boston to Laconia. I would commute to Sandwich all summer with a good train. Hope B & M can resume some day. As the G's say 'in your heart' you know the rails are best! and I am anti-G now."

The summer has been good to Harriet and me - we hope sincerely that it has been to you to!!!

IT'S NOT A MYTH! IT'S YOU'RE 35TH START PLANNING NOW.
