The season of station wagon safaris is upon us once again! Memorial Field, Harvard Stadium, and Yale Bowl beckoned and off in a cloud of exhaust smoke we went, hunting for big game(s). The exploits of our classmates on these various sojourns will be reported in subsequent columns.
The official opening of the safari season for those of us in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut areas took place in the latter part of September at Pocantico Hills, Tarrytown, N. Y. Rod and Barbara Rockefeller graciously hosted our third annual class picnic. The affair was more of a success than ever this year since we were encouraged to bring the children with us. While Rod supervised some youngsters pony riding and Barbara showed the others how to fish in the pond, the rest of us could enjoy talking to one another over hamburgers and beer at our leisure. Masterminding this parents' delight was picnic chairman, FrankWeiser.
Among those I saw at the picnic were Glenn Wesselman, Jim Grady, Don Brief, Dick Grassey, Bill Cohn, Tom Kelsey, Bill White, Tony Kane, Stan Rosenberg, Kent Klineman, Dave Levine, Lo-Yi Chan, Dick Trowbridge, Hugh Nolin, Dave Mandelbaum, Dick Rubin, Art Rauch, Bob Adnopoz, and Bob Vorsanger.
This seems to be a season of increased activity for the doctors among us. JohnBlum writes that, after six years of training in surgery and urology at the University of Minnesota, he has moved to the Chicago area where he has been appointed chairman of the Division of Urology at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Chicago Medical School. While at Minnesota, John was the recipient of a $35,000.00 U.S. Public Health Service grant to investigate urological problems and develop the lab there. John, wife Debra, and their three children now reside in Wilmette, Ill
Don Brief, after serving as a chief resident at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital for several years, has returned with his wife Beth and four briefer Briefs to Maplewood, N. J. Don has opened an office in the Newark suburb of Millburn for the practice of general and vascular surgery.
Also moving to New Jersey is StanRosenberg who is relinquishing his present position as chief resident in urology at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. On the first of the new year, Stan will start in private practice as a urologist in Princeton, N. J. Stan advises that also about January 1 and also in Tiger Town, U.S.A., JayChandler will begin the practice of surgery.
The attraction of Princeton, N. J., as the place for starting a professional career is not limited to doctors. Mike Spicer has announced his recent association with the Nassau Street law firm of Jamieson, Walsh and McCardell.
There is much activity too this season by classmates in the field of education. MikePapantones has been appointed as guidance counsellor at Westfield (Mass.) Junior High School. At Nichols College in Dudley, Mass., Jim Conrad was elevated from instructor to assistant professor in history. Jim, who was formerly Director of Admissions at Nichols, is studying for a Ph.D. in history at the University of Connecticut.
A month-long exhibition of photographs by Nick Dean was recently on display at Trinity College. The exhibition was part of a program established by the George Eastman House of Rochester, N. Y., to present significant work being done by today's younger photographers.
Lo-Yi Chan has been busy commuting between New York City and Cambridge, Mass., where he has been supervising the construction of M.I.T.'s newest and tallest building, the Center for Earth Sciences. Lo-Yi is employed by I. M. Pei & Associates, architects.
Another journeyer to Cambridge was Dick Wright. After working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Washington, D. C., for several years, Dick was recently transferred to Cambridge in connection with the construction there of NASA's multi-million dollar headquarters.
I hope that when all you big game hunters return from your station wagon safaris, you'll drop me a lion to let me know how you made out. But please don't tell me you ended up the journey with a tiger in your tank.
