Atlanta was one of the fortunate cities visited by Coach Bob Blackman during his flying tour of the Southern states. Charlie Altman '24 and Lou Fortuna '38 kept him busy during his brief stay with meetings with prospective students and visits to several of our high schools.
The high point of his visit for our alumni group, however, was a gathering at the home of Dr. Ben Read '32 on Sunday evening, February 23. About 25 of the regulars sprinkled with a few new faces, such as Guy Busch '49 and Fred Dorkin '53, were on hand to greet Coach Bob. To our enjoyment, we discovered that Dartmouth is favored not only by a competent coach, but by an able speaker and humorist.
The film of the 1957 football highlights pleased one and all and evoked the comment, "Gee! They really do play football up there after all!", from one of our prospective students. Following the showing of the film, a general "bull session" ensued, with Coach Blackman in the center of the group with Warren Agry '45, Dick Sears '47, Bob Bruce '30 and All-American Rog Antaya '43 keeping the questions popping at him. Others enjoying the session were Maury Readey '46, Bill Hartshorn '45, Dune Dobie '38 (now standing on his own two feet instead of crutches), and Wally Rogers '56. Among the other stalwarts present were Don Evans '44, Bud Purdy '29, Al Starrett '29, Fred Eaton '40 and Carl Evans '48.
Unable to get to the Hopkins Dinner in New York on February 5, this Dartmouth alumni group in Caracas, Venezuela, gathered in the Hotel Tamanaco to drink a toast to Dr. Hopkins and send him a cable of congratulations. L to r: Dick Tilt '30, visiting from New York City; Bob Bottome '30, Bill Bumsted '40, Bill Coles '29, Harry Casler '30, Jack Tansey '57, John Phelps '45, Xavier March '57 and Grosvenor Blood '34.
