A mystery as to the San Francisco-Los-Angeles shuffling over recent months of "Brugy" Bruguiere has been solved by a recent letter from him. "Brugy,' for 10 years, was editor of Western Advertising Magazine and a loyal San Franciscan, when up and off to Los Angeles moves his magazine under new ownership. moving to L.A. for a S.F.'er is, according to "Brugh," a fate worse than ----. He proved the correctness of his apprehensions by trying L.A. for six months, but is now back in the Bay area with a new job in advertising with F M C in San Jose. Equal time in these columns will be allotted to any '27 Angelino (?) who wishes to advance this Californian squabble.
Bob Stevens tells me about Bob Tucker's son, Bob. Those of you in attendance will recall him at recent fall reunions. As a result of his outstanding record at Dartmouth, the College has awarded him a Reynolds Fellowship for next year. He will study zoology at New College Oxford. All 27ers congratulate Bob Tucker '63 and Bob Tucker '27 for this honor.
Ed Jacob belatedly tells us he was cruising the Virgin Islands, leewards and wind-wards in December with his daughter, Dotsy, and her fiancé, Bert Bacon. Further reports that his Downeaster lobster business is clawing ahead nicely.
Flemington, N. J., paper, The Democrat, offers the news that Ken Yeaton is the new president of the Hunterdon County Board of Realtors. Ken spent a year or so after college with American Express, then entered the real estate business. From '39 to '45 he was with Federal Housing Administration in Camden before returning to Flemington where he has been a prominent realtor since.
You all have the Speak, the postcard follow up and Don O'Hara's letter regarding the April 15 '27 New York Dinner. Next issue will cover who came and what our honored guest, Sykes Hardy, had to say.
In April Fortune Magazine, the section headed "Business Men In The News" has a handsome picture of' Lee Greenebaum who got Hertz into the low cost car rental business with their new subsidiary, Valcar.
Charlie Gibson says "expect to be in the Aegean Sea area in early April. Find I am going to leave Athens the day before MikeChoukas arrives. Will be thinking of you boys still contending with snow in the far - far north." And he is so right since your scribe got snowbound for four hours in the Washington (D. C. that is) Airport on Easter Monday. This one day miss by Choukas-Gibson is another reason for a '27 travel bureau. Although after my complaint about poor scheduling in the Caribbean this winter — spring, Coggy Broer tells me "we were delighted on arriving at Virgin Gorda to find Dud Bonsai and Lois arriving at the same time. We were only there five days but saw a lot of them and had many good times together." This time the long arm of coincidence seems to have been working for '27.
Don Burnham setting a good example of annual reporting with a little detail, an example of which I wish more would follow, says in part - "a good year all told. Average good health. Moderate degree of prosperity in semi-retirement. Basic activity Connecticut and Vermont real estate, buying, building, selling cabins for more affluent members of society. Annexed an eighth grandchild to draw closer to Lawrence. Have issued explicit orders that competition closes as of now. Will not die richest guy in the cemetery in worldly goods, but sure will go with many happy memories of experiences and friends." A busy, happy guy like this can scratch cemetery talk, don't you think?
'27 has been honored, by Sid Hayward, asking yours truly to tell the May 1, 2 Class Officers Meeting something about '27's class organization. Sid admits the idea came when we took the class attendance honors at the Boston Alumni Dinner. More about this next issue but have received lots of help in getting material from Les Battin, Bob Williamson, Bill Cusack, a wonderful chart of '27s history from Bob Stevens, Lee Loeb,Lee Greenebaum, Gus Cummings and others. Hope to have a contribution for a future issue of the Speak out of all of this assistance.
