Coach Whitney Burnham's wrestling team completed its season with a 6-2 mark and a third place in the New England Intercollegiates. Tim O'Keeffe of Brookline, Mass., was the pace setter for the team as he. recorded seven -victories and one defeat and finished third in the 147-pound division in the championships.
Denny Eberl at 137 and Captain Rick DuPuy at 130 each had fine records with six victories apiece. Heavyweight Wally Buschmann had five wins, two losses, and a draw. Buschmann, Eberl, and Pat Woodworth (at 177) all took thirds in the intercollegiates.
The indoor track season came to a close with the Green recording only one victory in eight starts. Two sophomores were the bright spots in the winter season: broad jumper Bill Hayden of Bethesda, Md., and hurdler Jim Season of Cleveland, Ohio, each had five first places and three seconds. Hayden's leap of 23 feet 1½ inches took third in the Heptagonals, while Season was fourth in the Hep hurdles.
Captain Lynn Bates had the best overall record in the pole vault with seven firsts and a third place against Army. He was fifth in the Heps.
Sophomores also played a key role in the swimming campaign as the Green completed a 6-6 season. On the final weekend the Green was beaten by Colgate 65-30, but then edged Cornell 48-47. Considering the fact that nine varsity swimmers were lost for various reasons, this was a notable season for Coach Karl Michael's men.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ed Larner, Bill Fryberger, Carl DuRei, and Captain Al Davis broke the College record by three seconds on its way to beating Cornell and bringing off the one- point team victory. The new record now stands at 3:22.0.
During the season senior Henry Marshall lowered the 200-yard breaststroke mark to 2:24.8, and Fryberger set a new 100-yard-breaststroke time of 1:06.6. DuRei, who competed in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events had the best individual record taking ten firsts, four seconds, one third, and one fourth in sixteen starts. Marshall accounted for nine first and two seconds in the breaststroke.
The squash team managed only two victories in twelve matches. Wally Lord and Dick Redington, each 5-7 for the season, had the best records. Lord reached the finals of the consolation round of the National Intercollegiates held at Dartmouth's Alumni Gym early in March. Captain Hop Potter, hampered by an injury, managed a 4-7 record, while seniors Whit Foster and Doug Judah each had 4-8 marks.
