It was a perfect day for football when the Indians tangled with the Columbia Lions, but what a game! Any hopes of any Ivy League crown were shattered on the turf of New York's Baker Field.

Disaster struck early in the first quarter as the Light Blue scored twice in less than two minutes. On a second-down play from their own ten-yard line, the Indians attempted a quick-kick. Columbia's guard Tony Day sensed the play and broke through to block the punt. The ball rolled into the end zone where end Dick Hassan fell on it for a touchdown. Tom O'Connor's kick was good and the score read Columbia 7, Dartmouth 0.

The Indians took the kick-off, but on the first play from scrimmage fumbled a hand-off and the Lions recovered on the Dartmouth 14. On the first play, quarterback Tom Vasell hit Hassan in the end zone for the TD. Again the point after was good and the score read 14-0.

Unwilling to concede defeat at this early stage of the game, the Indians struck back late in the first quarter. In five plays they moved from their own 46 to the Columbia 18. Spangenberg broke off tackle for the remaining eighteen yards and a touchdown. King then ran the ball over for a two-point conversion.

The Lions put the game on ice as they took the second-half kickoff and marched eighty yards for a touchdown in twenty plays. Their left halfback Tom Haggerty carried thirteen times for nothing less than three yards per carry, and it was Haggerty who crossed the goal line with six more points for Columbia.

The Indians scored once in the fourth period on an anticlimatic pass from King to Dave Usher. The Lions put on another sustained drive which started on their nineteen and in the closing minutes of the game halfback Russ Warren cut through the center of the Green line and raced over forty yards for a final Columbia touchdown.

The Lions clearly dominated the play in the second half against a Big Green team that was injury-riddled. By the end of the game fullback Dave Evans had joined Jim Lemen on the sidelines, finished for the season.
