Tracts of 1179.6 acres on Mount Moosilauke that include East Peak, Jobildunc Ravine, and the south face of South Peak were acquired by the College from the Franconia Paper Corp. of Lincoln, N. H., through funds provided by Pennington Haile '24 of Norwich, Vt.
Formal presentation ceremonies took place in Lincoln on September 22 where Robert L. Marcalus, president of the Franconia Paper Corporation, passed the deed to John F. Meek '33, Treasurer and Vice President of the College. Speakers included Dr. Haile; College Forester Robert S. Monahan '29; Henry Waldo, woodlands manager of Franconia Paper Corporation; and Sherman Adams '20 of Lincoln, who spoke on "Mount Moosilauke As I Have Known It Through the Years."
Dartmouth first acquired land on Moosilauke in 1920 when a summit tract was given by Charles Woodworth '07 and E. K. Woodworth '97. The new gift of land brings the College's holdings on the mountain to 2200 acres.
The area up to the 4810-foot summit is a frequent subject for study by Dartmouth scientists. They have observed a range of vegetation and soil conditions that can be seen on level ground only by traveling 700 miles north. The new tracts will also make a variety of trails available for Outing Club members and other Dartmouth organizations and their guests.
