DARTMOUTH lost by graduation three excellent first-team players: forwards Jim Cooper and Chip Hayes and defenseman Chuck Zeh. Players of this caliber cannot possibly be replaced by any of last year's freshmen, who had a very poor season (4 wins, 1 tie, 13 losses). The three prospects from last year's freshman team who will try to fill these positions are defenseman and frosh captain John Meehan, and forwards Tom Long and Russ Martin.
Dartmouth has eleven lettermen returning and will be about as strong as last year, but we anticipate much stronger competition in the league. I feel that Cornell, Harvard, Yale and Princeton will be stronger, and Brown is the defending champ - so you can see what I mean.
In Dean Mathews Dartmouth has one of its greatest and most colorful hockey players. Last year he was a strong candidate for All-America until he got badly injured and played only in spots in the last five games. In Charles Stuart the team has a great leader and captain and one of the most talented defensemen in the East.
The Ivy League should see some great and exciting games, but Cornell will be the team to beat.
