A milestone in the Dartmouth Alumni Club Scholarship Program — total combined endowment of a half-million dollars — was passed in 1964, the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the program.
At its June 1934 meeting the Dartmouth Alumni Council approved the first club scholarship, sponsored by the Chicago Alumni Association. Today 40 Dartmouth clubs have scholarship or loan funds, responsible for scholarship assistance totaling $20,000 to 18 Dartmouth undergraduates. Over the years, more than 200 young men have been helped, to the extent of almost $150,000 in scholarship aid alone.
The acknowledged leader in this enterprise is the Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Northwest which boasts four separate funds, but other clubs with actively functioning or rapidly growing funds include Bergen County, N. J., Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Essex and Morris Counties, N. J., Hartford, Heart of America, Houston, Merrimack County, N. H., New Haven, Rhode Island, Rochester, St. Louis, Southern California, Toledo, Washington, Westchester County, N. Y., Western Connecticut, Western New York, Western Washington, and Worcester.
A study committee commissioned by the Trustees' Committee on Alumni and Public Affairs is presently recommending that the program be en- couraged and that the Office of Development be prepared to offer staff assistance to clubs desiring to initiate a new program or revitalize an existing one. Emphasis in the report is placed on the importance of proper scheduling and execution of these programs within the framework of sound fund-raising principles.
