OCTOBER 1966

Replacing the Great Issues program in the lives of the new senior class will be the 1966-67 Senior Symposia, a program with such an impressive lineup of first speakers that it must be reckoned as one of the most exciting innovations of recent years.

The fall schedule of speakers for Senior Symposia, three of a total of five or six over the academic year, will bring poet and playwright Archibald MacLeish to Dartmouth on October 24-25, former Secretary of State Dean Acheson on November 14-15, and the noted British author, economist, and lecturer Barbara Ward (Lady Jackson) on November 28-29.

The Senior Symposia have been designed and will be directed by President Dickey at the request of the Faculty. He is being assisted by Associate Director Larry Smith of the Department of History and by a committee of six seniors headed by Richard Clapp '67, chairman of Palaeopitus.

Mr. Dickey and his committee plan to experiment with a variety of formats ranging from student panels to the more formal lectures. In the first presentation, however, the seniors will be treated to a "conversation" between Mr. Dickey and Mr. MacLeish. On the following day a student panel will be on stage to quiz Mr. MacLeish. Students in the audience will have their opportunities to ask questions of MacLeish also. In all the Senior Symposia the emphasis will be on as much student participation as possible.

There will be no examinations, grades, papers, or required attendance connected with Senior Symposia, as it is now set up, but the program is an official degree requirement. All members of the senior class will be invited and expected to attend.
