Dartmouth College began its 214 th academic year with convocation ceremonies on Monday, September 19 in Thompson Arena. The ceremonies included addresses by senior class president Steven R. Lipscomb;' David Rockefeller, former chairman of the board of Chase Manhattan Bank; and Dartmouth President David T. McLaughlin.

Mr. Rockefeller's Dartmouth appearance came in conjunction with the opening of the College's Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences, named in honor of his late brother, a 1930 Dartmouth graduate and formerly the Vice President of the United States and Governor of New York State. The Rockefeller Center official dedication ceremonies took place later that week on Saturday, September 24.

Mr. Rockefeller, a Harvard graduate, was the first guest speaker to address a Dartmouth convocation in recent years. He currently serves as chairman of the Chase Manhattan Bank's international advisory committee and was the bank's chairman of the board from 1969 until his retirement in 1981. During his 35-year career with Chase, Rockefeller gained a worldwide reputation as a leading spokesman in the international business community, and he has remained active in a number of international, governmental, civic and cultural affairs.

Steven Lipscomb, a philosophy major at Dartmouth and president of the Class of 1984, is from Knoxville, Tenn. He is a member of the College debating team and has been active in the reorganization of student government and the subsequent creation of the Dartmouth Student Assembly.

David McLaughlin, Dartmouth's 14th president in the Wheelock Succession, also addressed the undergraduate body and faculty of the College.

The invocation was delivered by Religion Prof. Fred Berthold, acting dean of the Tucker Foundation and Chaplain of the College.
