John Tortes Meyers, "The Chief," is still in the public eye as he appeared on TV in connection with the story of the early days of baseball as told by the men who played it. There are 22 men honored in the book, "The Glory of Their Times," which covers the years 1898-1945. The Chief played from 1909-1917 when he went into World War I service. There has also been produced a long-playing record containing excerpts from the tape recordings from which the book was written.
Ogden Brown, "Buster," says that he is keeping in fair shape but finds it more of a struggle to keep going. Classmates will recall that Buster has been confined to a wheelchair for years.
Elbert M. Moffatt, who was business manager of the '09 Aegis, is more or less confined to a wheelchair by arthritis. During the summer, he visited his son and family in Glastonbury, Conn., and met Magdalene Rose, widow of Philip, at the Buckingham Congregational Church where Carol Rose Ikeler was preaching in her father's old parish.
Carol Rose was married to Bernard C. Ikeler on June 18 in the Grace Presbyterian Church, Jenkintown, Penn. They are both on the editorial staff of the "Presbyterian Life Magazine," Philadelphia. May they have a long and happy life together.
James F. Greenebaum and Hortense report that retirement is not for them and that Hortense is still busy in real estate and Jim still plays a little tennis. He is the only '09er keeping up this sport.
Frank and Constance Austin are busy as these notes are being written preparing for a visit from hurricane Inez. Their place in Hibernia, Fla., is on the banks of the St. John's River.
The sympathy of the Class goes to Harriet Holmes, widow of our Bob, in the death of her remaining son David this summer at Meredith, N. H. Her home address is 9 Lewis Road, Winchester, Mass. 01890.
Josephine Ford, widow of Ned, has completed 16 years as chairman of the annual dinner of the Winslow House Association in Marshfield, Mass. This association maintains the historic Winslow House at the corner of Careswell Street (Route 139) and Webster Street. Ned had been chairman of the house committee from 1930 until his death.
Charlotte Shoppelry, widow of Art, still talks about the good time she had at the reunion in June. Your secretary and his wife had a short visit with her last month.
Birthday greetings go this month to John F. Glynn (4), Frank S. Austin (6), Albert W. Bates (7), Herbert M. Walker (7), James Hitchcock (12), Ernest C. Whitney (17) and Asher A. Clement (27). Frank Austin, John Glynn and Herbert Walker join the group of octogenarians with these birthdays.
