Dartmouth Fishing Team Wins Canadian Honors
NOVEMBER 1966

DARTMOUTH'S participation in the 11th Annual Intercollegiate Game Fish Seminar and Fishing Match at Wedgeport, Nova Scotia, in September resulted in the Green team's taking second honors, behind the University of New Brunswick. As the top American team, Dartmouth was awarded the Schaefer Cup.

Dartmouth's five-man team, captained by Bill MacCarty '67 of Norwich, Vt., and coached by Jim Schwedland '48, educational officer of the D.0.C., was in fifth place at the end of the first day's competition. Hard fishing (mostly jigging) and good luck moved the team into second place by the end of the second day. On the third day Dartmouth maintained its position and was the apparent winner until the New Brunswick crew, the last boat of the day, weighed in and edged into first place. The aggregate score of the American teams - Dartmouth, Harvard, Massachusetts, Princeton, and Yale - was greater than that of the Canadian teams - Dalhousie, New Brunswick, St. Francis Xavier, Toronto, and Western Ontario — so Dartmouth as the top-scoring American team received the Schaefer Cup.

Members of the Dartmouth team were selected from leaders of the divisions of the Outing Club, including Cabin and Trail, Winter Sports, and Bait and Bullet. In addition to MacCarty, the members were Dick Galardy '68 of Ellicott City, Md.; Bjorn Lang '68 of Absecon, N. J.; Jack Noon '68 of Short Hills, N. J.; and John Schumacher '67 of Augusta, Maine. Noon, secretary of Bait and Bullet, will be captain of next year's team.
