Last fall several undergraduates in search of film-making experience began work on a film that was to become the Dartmouth Newsreel. The idea for a film chronicle of activities on campus was suggested by Blair Watson, director of Dartmouth Films, as a useful outlet for creative energies. This month, after a year of shooting, editing, and finally preparing the original for printing, the newsreel is ready for distribution to interested alumni and others. It runs twenty minutes, and includes sequences on the 1965 championship football team, the Freshman One-Act Plays, the Dartmouth Film Study Conference, Dartmouth Night, and other fall-term events.
The impulse and. the opportunity to make a film stemmed from the increased student interest in film production and from alumni and administration support. Maurice H. Rapf '35 headed a fundraising drive during the fall of 1965 which provided Dartmouth Films with a Moviola (an invaluable editing machine) and partial financing for the cost of raw stock and processing. Robert Lawrence '41 donated a camera and editing equipment. Blair Watson added encouragement and advice, and Bob Gitt '63, of Dartmouth Films, provided technical assistance.
Information about obtaining Dartmouth Newsreel for club or personal showing can be obtained from Dartmouth Films, Fairbanks Hall, Hanover, N. H. 03755.
