By their vote establishing the Honor Principle at Dartmouth three years ago, the students themselves did as much, if not more, in support of a serious educational climate than any curriculum study committee. They, by their act and by their support of the Honor Principle since its inception, have asserted a willingness to maintain standards of academic honesty.
It is the opinion of Dean of the College Thaddeus Seymour and many others that good education flourishes in an atmosphere of trust. The student vote was welcomed with enthusiasm, and in the events of the years since there has been nothing to diminish that enthusiasm.
The Honor Principle, Dean Seymour notes, is "a significant corollary to present educational aims of the College and at the same time reaffirms Dartmouth's concern for the character of the individual."
